I despair this could have been a positive book instead of this.

The gay community rightly and successfully distanced itself from bigoted allegations that "gayness" is somehow associated with paedophilia. This kind of book does untold damage by dragging in fetishes, unnecessary surgeries, and other references which are, at least, questionable.

Jesus, what have I just looked at? The guys in fetish gear.. When my dc were the ages of 2-7 we read the Gruffalo etc... And why bring Grandads into it? Thiz book is chilling... It's so depressing, I can’t believe what’s happening in the world at the moment. People are going through hell in Ukraine, women are suicidal in Afghanistan due to having their rights completely suppressed and perverts are getting a free pass in the western world because it’s apparently fashionable to be ‘diverse’ and ‘inclusive’.

Granddads are brought in to give it a more homely appeal

When Granddad was at Pride, it would have been a totally different experience, radical, angry but joyous featuring all sorts of grass roots activists

Now Pride is a procession of corporate sponsored floats and lectures featuring corporate sponsored opinions with dissent being purged.

It's been shown to kids at a preschool in Hull. They've now removed the book after initially saying that children wouldn't understand the images. Criticism is apparently bigoted and homophobic according to the publisher

And the nursery staff member the parents spoke to saw no problem with the book because the children were so young they wouldn't understand the sexual references.

There's someone who deserves to lose her job.

They defended book on the grounds that Waterstones etc stock it. So it must be good, right? 🙄

Will Taylor has just been interviewed on local BBC news. He was very articulate in why it is a problem (just because children don’t understand an adult thing, doesn’t mean it’s appropriate to do it in front of children). The statement from the publishers say it’s a faithful representation of what children see at a Pride event so it’s fine.

That's a reason to not take them to pride, not a reason to put pride in a children's book! Ffs!

I work in a library and we have been told to say, if anyone complains, that the image of grandad in bondage is a realistic image....as per this

They have given no thought to anything else that appears in the book. If your library holds a copy...please please complain..libraries are very captured but not all the staff are!

Iirc there was a thread about this book a little while ago (or a thread where it was mentioned) in the American edition the illustrations were changed.

Is it worth leaving reviews on the Booktrust site, or do they get vetted and removed?

I've submitted a review, actually a positive one overall, just commented on the unsuitability of men in fetishwear. Perhaps I'll give 'em the weekend. Didn't have to leave an email but I'm still half expecting the West Yorkshire Police rapid response team to turn up and kick my door down. I hope one of them doesn't look like my sister, I'd have to say something.

And to think back in the day there were complaints about Katie Morag because there was an illustration of a baby being breastfed.

I’m really sick of a small group of men trying to associate LGB with fetish and kinks, I’m a lesbian and I have no interest in BDSM or anything related to it, it’s not tied to being gay (plenty of straight people are into bdsm and plenty of gay people aren’t) and kids don’t need to be exposed to fetishes as part of inclusivity, why couldn’t grandad just have a nice husband? Why the need to have them in bondage gear? It just plays into the hands of people who think gay people are perverted and unsuitable for children to be exposed to.
