What do your children see at Art Galleries?

When my daughter was eight, as part of her education on Greek Mythology, she was taken with her class to the National Gallery to see The Judgement of Paris. When I tried to upload it here, it was deemed 'sensitive' and so would be masked for viewers. Some of your children are probably looking at that painting right now, in the hallowed atmosphere of our National Gallery. In case you have trouble viewing it on here, here is a link https://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/peter-paul-rubens-the-judgement-of-paris
What messages do you think they're getting about men and women's place in the world?

I took my dc to Paris and all of the art/statues/architecture was judged based on the number of boobies and willies. There are a remarkable number of boobies and willies on public display in Paris.

The bigger picture would be totally lost on a y4 child. Year 9s studying art or history might get it (but they'd still be taking the mickey about rude bits)

@Grammarnut

I agree.

I'm also more focused on seeing more women painters in galleries rather than censoring existing work.
The women who modelled often have their own artistic histories that could be explored too.

Really interesting! I hadn't heard of you but do agree - however I only started noticing when AAB and others in the art world started to comment and raise awareness.

Although... I did start to read thing when doing my fine art dissertation in the 90's; women are more likely to be portrayed as dying or dead which is something that often occurs in fashion magazine photography. It got better in the last decade but I do still often see it.

These images do permeate the ideals of young girls and boys as they grow up.

As in; the poses models take are sometimes languishing and splayed.
