Yet this is the one policy point where he is far ahead of the opposition. Hope he realises that, for some voters, it is an absolute deal breaker

Nothing in his past performance suggest that. And he's becoming increasingly distracted with having to watch his back from the Boris backlash, so it's unlikely this is top of his pops. (Not that it ever was).

Seems some posters may have to find another fig leaf to justify voting Tory. Maybe their fashion sense ?

Well, it’s an important enough issue to me, that it gets my vote - but only for action, not platitudes

ArabeIIaScott · 03/06/2023 19:27

Sort it out Rishi!

how about I just vote for whoever I want because it’s a free country?

aweegc · 03/06/2023 20:48

I hold out hope that he will because he has two daughters who he has sent to a single sex school. I'm hoping he's very aware of the difference males make.

On the other hand, being in a cocoon of wealth and privilege, he may neither care nor have the slightest inkling.

And that's aside from his political career directing influencing his decisions.

DemiColon · 03/06/2023 20:52

I hope he goes ahead with it, I am sure there are people pressing from the other direction.

I'm would rather slow and solid though, rather than rushing something ahead that won't do the job.

I didn’t realise voters needed your approval for their choices. Sod that.

Some of those things are probably not politically possible.

grannysmithspips · 04/06/2023 00:16

"Until then the Tories are not serious about this."

The Tories are not serious about this - everything that worries you about this situation has happened and is happening under Tory rule. They will say ANYTHING to get elected. They will do NOTHING. Mark my words

Go ahead and vote for anybody you like - is is your absolute right and nobody is trying to stop you - but don't pretend it's because you think the Tories care about safe spaces for women.

Chersfrozenface · 04/06/2023 04:42

"safe spaces" is the woolly, meaningless term Labour uses.

What we want is single sex spaces.

Sex, not gender.

PomegranateOfPersephone · 04/06/2023 06:29

This really weird, why suppose that anyone needs a fig leaf for voting Tory? Why would you think that people who vote Tory are ashamed of it and need a cover up? Also why assume that anyone who says “I am voting Tory because they recognise that sex is real and that penis people = men and vulva people = women” is not being honest about that motivation?

I haven’t been able to bring myself to vote Tory, I disagree with their economic policies too strongly for that but I note that their politicians are able to speak freely and retain the support of their party unlike parties of the left.

I note also that they seem to value people based on individual merit rather than identity which seems to lead to women and ethnic minorities rising through the ranks more successfully than does the identity politics, quotas and hierarchy of oppression preferred by parties of the left.

DarkForces · 04/06/2023 06:36

@grannysmithspips I live in Wales and have first hand experience of how little of a shit Labour give about women, still I struggled with the idea of voting Tory but thanks to you, no longer. You're right. I'll vote for whoever I want

Floisme · 04/06/2023 09:12

I think op, that attempting to shame people for exercising their democratic right is risible.

That said, I am watching what all parties say and do and, even if Sunak makes this a manifesto promise I will not be impressed, as I understood the government had the means to clarify the Equality Act within the current parliament if they so chose?

But if we got to where we are under Tory rule and they won't expressly commit to changing anything then where does that leave all the people, specifically women, who'd been holding out hope for any semblance of justification to vote Tory.

What hope at all do women have if Labour / LabLibDems form the next government?

We know what their policies are, full-on gender ideology.

There are no rights being taken away in that list. No one at all should be able to falsify their official documents - it is an indefensible and illogical privilege bizarrely extended to a very small group. Women's spaces are for women only, other people have rights and your wants should not impinge on them, you already have suitable provision after all.

True. Starmer seems to fall off the fence every time the wind changes direction.

I remember when this topic came up r.e. voting tories on here not too long ago and I said something akin to what a relief it must be for some women to be able to vote tory without any hangups. I sometimes wonder if it just wouldn't be easier to vote tory and go than to engage in the mental gymnastics of the charade. If women and girls/children are such a priority then curious the tories had to be bullied by a millionaire footballer to provide meals for the kids during lockdown. My favourite was how the most vulnerable women, for example, imprisoned women would be safer under tory rule because men masquerading as women wouldn't be afforded safe-haven in a women's prison - good thing the structural conditions that resulted in these women ending up in prison are maintained so they'll definitely still have to go to jail but at least their cell mate will defo have a vagina.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 04/06/2023 09:55

You know what really puts my teeth on edge?

people who assume their political allegiances automatically make them good people

sure sign of shallow thinking

True

There’s no doubt Labour Lib Dem’s will be TWAW full on

If voters care as they say they do I’d avoid

That is quite clearly a list of things that repeal the rights of trans people.

At least be honest about what you are trying to do.

The female prison population was 4,500 in 2005. Which party was in power then? (For comparison in July 2022 the figure was 3,219.)
