Hi,
I've posted here before about my university preventing me from voting in SU elections, but today I saw my university was looking for a part-time "Trans officer" to "help connect and support trans students". No such thing exists for any other LGB student (which I am) at my university, not even in the LGBT soc. I feel like I should voice my concerns but am not sure how to start.
So many friends have suggested to me that I join the LGBT Soc and I've always found a way to avoid it but I find the whole situation outrageous. The society has specific representatives for trans and ace people but not gay men or lesbian women. There is a woman's officer but my assumption would be there is nothing stopping a TW from running for that position.
I have emailed my concerns about lesbian students not feeling represented or listened to, to both the university welfare rep and the inclusion rep. I would send my concerns to the university women's rep but am hesitant as she is very focussed on "everyone who identifies as a woman".
Should I just bite the bullet and ask why trans get their own rep while lesbians, gay men and bisexuals are all just lumped together, despite the different needs and issues they face?
