Jennifer Lawrence's secret filming in Afghanistan www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-65624203

Technically by a very brave Afghan woman named Sahra Mani in partnership with Lawrence and Justine Ciarrocchi, co owner of production company Excellent Cadaver, set up in 2018.

Sahra Mani, a documentary maker who co-founded the independent Kabul production company, Afghan Doc House.

Both Lawrence and Ciarrocchi had watched her critically-acclaimed documentary A Thousand Girls Like Me, which profiles a 23-year-old Afghan woman who goes on national television to expose sexual abuse by her father, after being ignored by her family and the police.

Ciarrocchi tracked down Mani, who said that she had already begun a project, following three women in the country as they tried to establish some kind of autonomy in the months following the Taliban takeover, as girls and women were barred from universities and schools.

Very much looking forward to this documentary.

Posting here partly for traffic, mostly as it sounds like a fantastic film and I'm glad it's getting world stage attention via Lawrence.

And partly for the highly annoying title of gender identity correspondent. However I actually CBA with a discussion about that detracting from the central issue. This board used to be called women's rights and Afghanistan has a a massive women's rights issue.

Thanks OP - another important yet devastating piece to watch. The bravery of these women....

It does feel like a hopeless situation but really pleased that JL is able to raise the awareness of this film.

From the article linked by the OP:

"They were there whenever I faced any issues or problems," Mani says. "When women unite, everything is possible."

And we all know that the fear of women uniting is why meetings get protested, speakers get cancelled, death and rape threats are sent to those who speak up and young women are told to be kind and not listen to us mean, out of touch middle aged women.

Because when women unite, everything is possible.

These are the women's rights issues that matter. We in western European democracies have plenty of other issues, but the state isn't murdering us for our existence.

I'm really looking forward to seeing this.
