Coram Life Education

Hello!
I have just received an email from my children's primary school advising that Coram Life Education will be welcomed into the Year 5 class to discuss puberty and conception. The school uses Jigsaw for their PHSE lessons. I am wondering if anybody here is familiar with Coram Life Education and what their actual agenda is, if indeed there is one?! I must admit I cannot understand why a 'charity' needs to exist for this purpose and why the usual class teachers are unable to teach the children themselves about puberty/conception. I am quite skeptical about the whole thing but may well be ignorant and am happy to be enlightened if this is the case. I have done an advanced search here on mumsnet and via Google! But was hoping for more information than I could find. Your time and advice is appreciated. 🙏

The deputy said coram would follow jigsaw phse which the school uses (and I have some issues with!)

I noticed coram was mentioned in a daily mail article over the weekend highlighting some of the questionable content they teach young children.

Yes, I saw the article and have requested what materials are going to be used- just waiting to hear back. I don't want to look OTT and start the conversation with I've read a DM article but the lesson plans on Coram do say yr 6 talks about Transgender, FGM, sexual intercourse etc and they are my issues - I feel they are too young.

You don't need to mention the dm article. All the information presented in the article is on coram website which you can access yourself.

I'm sure it would be much better for the children to receive sex and relationship education from trusted adults they know, who have also been vetted through the school's safeguarding procedures.

These outside organisations don't have to do the mandatory safeguarding training schools do, their staff don't need enhanced DBS as school staff do. They're talking about a subject where safeguarding is so important, and they don't meet the same standards as staff in school - how Headteachers can justify that decision, on safeguarding grounds along, I don't know. And it's appalling they're not checking the resources and parents are having to point out issues of concern.

Of course these groups will be infiltrated by people with an agenda the whole history of safeguarding failures tells us to expect this.

Interesting how there's so very many 'charities' wanting to do this but fewer wanting to come in and take over Maths teaching, for example (though I don't think that would be good either, but not as many safeguarding red flags).

What's the point of having teachers if this most critical of subjects isn't even taught by them? Just outsource everything?

I do think schools that outsource RSE in this way are failing the children

I agree completely!
