Ocado requires you to have a gender identity

To fill in their latest survey. I've complained about this to them before, and I've just complained again.

Where is the N/A or None option?

I don't "identify in another way" if I don't have a gender identity at all. But neither would I "prefer not to say", because I will openly state that I don't have a gender identity.

I don't mind them asking, if they feel they must, but I want to have an option I can select!

I identify in another way - my actual sex!

Needmoresleep · 05/05/2023 08:41

It’s tedious. I was wanting to volunteer to help with the BFI film festival. On the first page of the application pronouns are a required field. I don’t want to give my pronouns. I don’t want a badge with my pronouns on.

One silver lining is that they plan to prioritise underrepresented groups and say that are over represented. Or at this point will they forget TWAW and give priority to transwomen.

MagpiePi · 05/05/2023 08:41

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. Like being forced to pick a religion when you are an atheist.

zibzibara · 05/05/2023 08:41

I wonder what they even do with this data, it would be interesting to know why they think 'gender identity' is at all relevant to buying groceries.

Whaeanui · 05/05/2023 08:43

Yes it’s how they are trying to force through language change, if we all answer these gender identity questions, they’ll slowly replace the sex question. I didn’t even do an NHS survey because it asked me that instead of my sex, it asked if my gender identity matched my sex observed at birth with no option to say I don’t believe in this or I don’t have an identity. I meant to find a person to contact over it but didn’t get round to it.

I’d identify as a customer of another supermarket

I had this in a survey at work. I refused to fill in the survey and explained why. It actually enabled me to have a few enlightening conversations. Anyway, next time it was optional.
I always challenge this shit.

Thats a good point. Don't GDPR rules state that companies are only allowed to collect data that they actually need to provide the service?

Pretty sure that's what it was when it came in anyway, I'm a bit out of the loop these days.

Chersfrozenface · 05/05/2023 08:50

Companies like Ocado used to ask whether you were male or female in order to study differences in purchasing patterns, to try to make marketing more effective.

They then introduced "prefer not to say" because some people found the question nosy/intrusive.

Now they've introduced various flavours of gender identity, having been told that they will alienate potential customers by presuming that everyone is male or female.

What they're actually doing is alienating some customers who don't have a gender identity, and producing results that are useless for marketing purposes.

They'd be better off scrapping the question altogether.

horseymum · 05/05/2023 08:52

I always answer with other where possible and state no gender identity, sex is female, do not use pronouns on any badge. Have to do this for my kids too.

MrsJamin · 05/05/2023 08:56

I ditched ocado ages ago when I realised that Morrisons online service is basically the same but a lot cheaper! Same warehouses (i.e. not picked from the local supermarket), same vans, same bags even! So everyone should switch anyway, save money, and tell Ocado they can stick their gender identities up their arses.

MagpiePi · 05/05/2023 08:56

We have similar convoluted questions on the company annual staff survey, nothing about actual biological sex. I did some digging and it is the Stonewall approved version, they are a Stonewall champion company.
I complained about it in the survey itself and have taken it up with HR.

I did ask how it complies with GDPR, and how can they collect data for things like the gender pay gap if they don’t know the sex of their staff but haven’t heard back yet.

Very good!

I've never been their customer and now I never shall. This list of companies to boycot is getting longer by the day

ReadersD1gest · 05/05/2023 15:32

How are they planning to target marketing at people who identify another way? 😵‍💫. It beggars belief...

Yes, all sorts of issues arise out of recording some men as women. Crime rates, health and educational statistics...

It’s ridiculous isn’t it. Like being forced to pick a religion when you are an atheist.

☝️☝️☝️

I respect the fact that some people have a gender identity.

However, I don't. As an atheist, I also don't have a religion. I would be cross if a form didn't allow me to say "N/A" against various options for religion. "Prefer not to say" would sound like I'm embarrassed at my atheism. Not at all. If it's important enough to ask me for the data, it's important enough that I can give an honest answer if I want to. I can't see why the options for gender identity should be any different.

Mum2jenny · 05/05/2023 21:21

I’d identify as human

Yes, and this raises questions re GDPR; they should only be asking for data they need to do their job, nit all kids of extra stuff that they may simply want.

Also gender identity is utter bollox.

BluebellBlueballs · 07/05/2023 01:09

I usually answer 'I identify as... gender critical feminist '

Technically I don't identify as one I just am one

But it's a better answer than any of the other bolleaux

MrGHardy · 07/05/2023 23:26

For my tax declaration I have to answer that exact question, and the only option is "other". Although this is because you pay church tax via your income tax not because they actually want to know your religion.
