In what ways can local councillors make a difference for women?

I'm pondering this as the local wannabe contacted me and said the GRA was not something he could influence on a local level. He's right but what could he influence? The local swimming pool is run by a franchise, the secondary school is an academy 🤔

He's not expected to influence the law, but he is expected to uphold the equality act. He could just do his job and check its not being undermined.
Don't local councillors determine funding for local services? If its not them then who is pushing services like women's centres, Rape Crisis and DV shelters to be 'inclusive' and threatening their funding?

Well precisely. Then I thought maybe the rape crisis centres etc are charitable in origin. If everything is private then what do councillors spend their budget on or have power to influence? Pot holes. Toilet allocation in the town hall?

Local councils are also involved in grants and funding which can support private businesses and charities.

What type of council? That makes a difference in terms of what he could influence.

Also, just because leisure is run by a franchise, assuming that is contracted by the council the council itself is still responsible for the service.

I did wonder. I need to find out, but maybe I've left it too late for today's election. Wouldn't I just love to question a doorstopper...

Actually I didn't know so just checked. It's just my small village ward not the local district where the secondary school and pool are (where all the kids move on after primary). We have the WI of course, church and village events. Not aware of any women only services. Maybe he was right to suggest it wasn't relevant.
