Why women union members continue to apy subs to unions thaat don't respect women and are member of the TUc I do not know..

If you are fed up with your own union the non-TUC, politically independent trades union AFfinity is an alternative for teachers, lecturers, bank staff, IT consultants, financial advisers, academics, local government staff, lawyers and civil servants and many others

Do not make amendments to the Equality Act on the current definition of sex - Letter to Kemi Badenoch

Trade union movement writes to the Secretary of State urging her not to act on the advice from the EHRC to redefine the protected characteristic of ‘sex’ to ‘biological sex’.

As far as I'm aware, all we are talking about is "amending" something to make clear its original meaning. So how can that do any harm to anyone?

We shouldn't protect biological sex when it's already protected?

Presumably they want no protection for sex, but only for gender identity, and they think that was always the meaning of the legislation?

" they want no protection for sex, but only for gender identity"

Yep, that's about it I reckon.

The number of times, I've heard that the equality act doesn't need amending because it changes nothing.
If it makes no difference, why oppose the clarification? If the clarification makes a difference then it is sorely needed.

Schrodinger's change...

PorcelinaV · 30/04/2023 00:50

The only thing I can think of, is that maybe it would change the operation of gender recognition certificates.

Totally Utterly Captured.

The number of times, I've heard that the equality act doesn't need amending because it changes nothing.

That's because so many people have been Stonewalled and for instance insist that the EA exemtions that allow for single sex (ie based on biology) services are open to trans women with GRC.

And as so many people get their "information" from Stonewall and the newspaper parrot them like good pupils, some people really do think this is true.

Just another instance of how subversively Stonewall has been working against women's rights (the very limited ones we are still allowed).

IwantToRetire · 30/04/2023 01:36

In fact some think it means those who self ID are also allowed to be in singles sex services even when they are advertised as being offered under the EA exemptions.

nilsmousehammer · 30/04/2023 09:11

Stonewall have stated their mission to get single sex exemptions removed from the EqA so it obviously is seen as an unacceptable barrier.

The whole bleating about 'gains' in fact means 'please don't interfere with our successful wangling of the law to prevent it working for women'.

ScrollingLeaves · 30/04/2023 09:24

The existing act already has clear provisions for meeting the needs of multiple groups, as set out in the EHRC’s own guidance.

Yes, and one of these protected needs is “Gender Reassignment” and the other is “Sex”.

They were never intended to mean the same thing (as pushed by Stonewall et Al).

OP how do you know Affinity is OK about sex based rights?

MagicSpring · 30/04/2023 09:32

‘It is really important that the Act is not clear.’

Is that what they are saying?

From their website

"You may have read about the case of Kathleen Stock, a former Professor of Philosophy at the University of Sussex. Professor Stock was targeted by a group of students who criticised her for her views on gender identity. They began a campaign against her which became so heated, Professor Stock was told by the police to stay away from the university campus for her own safety. What was most surprising though was that the local branch of Professor Stock’s trade union (of which she was a member) called for an investigation into transphobia on campus, shortly after a campus protest where posters were put up accusing Professor Stock of being transphobic. Professor Stock accused her union of “effectively ending” her career at the university.

Whether we agree or disagree with Kathleen Stock’s views, under British law she had a right to express her opinion, just as people who disagree with her have a right to express theirs.

Our view is quite simple: we work to defend free speech under the law."

which suggests that they work with the law as it is not Stonewall law.

They are non-political so I doubt they will campaign as such but they seem to be very keen not to be captured either. I know they have worked with the Free Speech Union. They just seem a whole lot more balanced than the TUC based unions like the main teaching unions and the university lecturers union which are paid for by thousands of women workers.

The Labour Party is beholden to Union membership. They provide a big chunk of income. This could be the TUC bullying Labour.

I have been wondering what I'd do if my employer wanted me to use preferred pronouns. Thanks for the Affinity Union tip.
