This is so absurd what on earth do they think they are doing?...is this how they see women?

Omar Alaghabra Transport minister: Hope in Heels is an event that spreads awareness on violence against women while encouraging men and boys to be part of the solution. We wore their signature pink heels in support to this important cause.

It’s photopportunity politics.

Looks great on Twitter, has no real depth.

it’s the new kissing babies.

BabyStopCryin · 22/04/2023 09:17

Didn’t a police force do this on the U.K. and had photos of grinning male officers in bright red 6” spikes? They played it off as something like ‘women can’t run away in heels’ but they looked like they were having a laugh.

Flowerly · 22/04/2023 09:20

Wow. They are enjoying that a bit too much aren't they? Wankers.

FannyCann · 22/04/2023 09:35

How silly they look. Like a bunch of naughty boys who have raided their Mum's wardrobe. DD could be very cheaply entertained by spending half an hour in M&S shoe department when she was about age 3 tottering around in the highest shoes she could find. (Apologies to assistants tidying up after us Grin). She never wears high heels now she's an adult.

As regards Justin and those photos - the placing of his hand on his colleague's neck/chest is even more offensive than the blacking up imo. It makes my skin crawl.

HathorsFigTree · 22/04/2023 09:47

Is this a White Ribbon Campaign thing?

I remember someone mentioning about 15 years ago ‘walk a mile in her shoes’ and, being a flat-shoe wearer, I thought- eh? 🫤 You ‘walk a mile in the shoes’ of the sort of women who wear heels, not me. I felt alienated by it.

There is something potentially comical about it - the ungainliness, but so much has happened in the years since, that any message would be completely lost.

Reflecting on White Ribbon, I remember all those years ago that I, and a lot of women, were so grateful that men took an interest in wanting to end MVAWG that many of us didn’t really see what it would become- an invasive fascination with our menstruation, our paraphernalia, all the intimate stuff we want to keep private from them.

Apparently around 3% of men enjoy crossdressing. Perhaps it's a higher percentage amongst politicians.

Gesture politics. Where it's all about image, making noises, being seen to do exciting popularity raising/visibility raising things, and corporate marketing of yourself. Not about actually having real beliefs, values, care or interest in representing the needs of real people.

Hence the grabbing on to anything that does a nice bit of signalling/nice instagrammable photo ops, and a bit of entertainment and fun. While being utterly fucking oblivious.

We seem to be living in a world where MPs are starting to confuse themselves with Z list celebs and influencers.

This is true, but it was very popular in charitable campaigns a number of years ago - I am thinking maybe 15 years back?

There were all kinds of different breast cancer fundraisers, for example, with racy names. One we had locally to me involved stringing together bras to make a giant garland that stretched over the bridge on our harbour ( so about a km.)

That naked bike thing was also very popular about that time. And lots of organizations with naked calendars.

I know this probably sounds a little facile, but in a way this campaign almost reminds me of walking into a restaurant and finding the menu looks like it came from 1988.

TheBiologyStupid · 22/04/2023 12:20

Patronising much? What virtue-signalling idiots. A great ratio, though.

I liked this reply:
Woman around the world are rejoicing and feel safer now since a bunch of grown men in suits walked around the room in high heels. I wonder why we didn't do this earlier?

bellinisurge · 22/04/2023 12:21

Pathetic little men

Giggorata · 22/04/2023 12:31

Travesty, insulting, patronising, undignified, shallow, superficial, uninsightful, empty, virtue signalling, point missing, photo opping, cynical, bandwagon jumping, caricaturing, sexist bloody men. And breathe.

DOBARDAN · 22/04/2023 15:41

The men prancing around in high heels felt mocking and trivialises the whole issue of violence against women,
Just goes to show how little is thought of such a serious problem for so many women and girls by the Canadian MPs,
The 'Unmasking The Abuser' video resonated highly with me, there speaks a woman (Dina McMillan) who is giving good advice on how to recognise some of the ways in which (mostly) men manipulate and try to gain control over you,
What a contrast between the two links, thanks to @Mummyoflittledragon and @Xoxoxoxoxoxox
Women and girls can only do so much to prevent physical or mental violence/coercing against them,

Whaeanui · 22/04/2023 06:32

What the heck was that?!? It’s embarrassing, insulting and just weird.

I feel very upset watching that.

They are not my shoes.

IcakethereforeIam · 23/04/2023 07:47

Jaysus, if only they worked somewhere that had the power to put in meaningful measures to effect change....

😠 I hope they got blisters.

nilsmousehammer · 23/04/2023 07:56

I'm increasingly wondering if it's a Mermaids (and many other charities) type fuck up on a large scale. No change is wanted, no real engagement with the outside world is wanted, it's about sustaining a nice income job, a lot of nice PR, lots of stuff to keep the money rolling in, particularly photocatchy fun stuff because this is more world book day in a primary school or everyone doing the Gangnam Style dance than anything with any greater depth, and a nice little lot of networking with others of the club where the main aim (other than money and sustaining a happy job) is to impose the Right Values on the great unwashed outside the doors.

Lack of diversity of thinking, and having intentionally driven out anyone not of the club as has caused the rot in the UK. Alongside one fuck ton of arrogance, and proof that professional politicians are a very bad idea.

EdithStourton · 23/04/2023 09:03

Pisses me off.
I've almost never worn heels - I've never seen the point of voluntarily limiting yourself like that.

Though I did once, on purpose, put on a pair so that I could tower over an arsehole of a short arrogant man I was about to have to deal with.

RoseslnTheHospital · 23/04/2023 09:50

JKR getting to the point succinctly as usual.

It's not even as if they wore the stupid shoes all day, throughout their normal work commute, work day and home commute or to an evening out. Like women would do if they wore those types of heels. No, these men just titted about around their little meeting room for a couple of minutes. What a bunch of berks.

BabyStopCryin · 23/04/2023 10:34

So they have learned that heels are a bugger to walk in, hurt your toes and make your feet ache… and?

Toseland · 23/04/2023 10:45

Are they in training? What's next week's lesson - miniskirts and suspenders?

nilsmousehammer · 23/04/2023 12:12

But they felt naice about what naice people they were.

And the photos were pretty.

Probably a few happy penises too, what's not to love?

JK nail on the head as always.

An article in the Critic by Victoria Smith.

https://thecritic.co.uk/cool-your-heels/

They're so fucking patronising. Imagine if they did something like this for any other protected characteristic! Imagine if they slapped on a wig and lippy on TGEon of Visibility. They wouldn't dare. But they think they're being so 'stunning and brave' when they pull this shit for women.

Cool your heels | Victoria Smith | The Critic Magazine

At first I thought “Hope in High Heels” had to be a parody. A bunch of men in suits tottering round a boardroom in pink stilettos, raising awareness of male violence against women through the medium…

DemiColon · 26/04/2023 17:23

It's typically the charities that come up with these events, rather than the MPs. They are the ones who really deserve the criticism.

TheBiologyStupid · 26/04/2023 20:38

That's a great article, thanks cake.
