Women need to keep speaking out. And to think Biden is planning to overturn the ruling stopping this happening. The left is LOST.

In men's and mixed volleyball the net is higher, so a downward smash at that angle would probably not have been possible.

Very good point that's often forgotten - the specifications of the field and equipment in various sports has evolved and been refined for the respective sexes.

So that's yet another compounding factor - males being less constrained by being on a female-specced event. Things being generally lower, smaller, lighter, designed for female use. Men can hence do things they would not be able to do in a male event.

I have my own opinions on sex and sport, but I think that is just a really horrible accident that could have happened to anybody.

Mmm, have you heard of physics? Physics means that, if something hits you with a lot of force, it has more impact than something that hits you with a lesser force. Would you rather be hit in the face by a cricket ball or a shuttlecock?

Men have 60% greater upper body strength than women. A woman would not have hit the ball with that force.

GailBlancheViola · 20/04/2023 15:15

Was there any comment from the male thrower of the ball that so badly injured her or the team that fielded said male?

You may have your own opinions, you are entitled to them. BUT all opinions are not equal. Unless you have played yourself against men who are trained as athletes really you have no experience to bring to bear. I once played a "kickabout" fun short game of football with a group of friends of mixed sex. I was hit in the face by a ball playfully passed to me by a male friend. I can still feel the power and pain caused by the kick. An accident, yes. But a female kick would have nowhere near the power of one delivered by a male. I think this is an indisputable opinion on the basis of experience. What is yours?

That's alright then, nothing to see here.

I mean let's face it if a woman leaves her front door she could die in traffic. Or be hit by lightening, or die in a load of different ways.

Men get injured playing sports with men. Women could be injured playing sports with women. So in making previously single sex sports mixed sex we might technically be going from a situation where a woman being killed or injured 'could happen' to another situation where a woman being killed or injured 'could happen' it's just that's not particularly helpful analysis. Our point I think is that we said (and are saying) that if a sport is not safe to do mixed sex, then injuries to women will become more common, and more severe. And the prevalence and severity of such injuries will be a factor in causing women and girls to self exclude from sports (alongside other issues of privacy, dignity and fairness.)

If it is safe enough to do mixed sex that's a different matter but I don't think you can include or exclude people based on their gender identity.

“Just a really horrible accident” - you’re really keen to avoid the specific context in which this occurred.

In the last few years I’ve discovered that most people have no idea just how much stronger men are compared to women.

I'm beginning to think people are stupid enough that this is partly due to the prevalence of superhero movies/ kickass female characters. Based on no data whatsoever...

Buffy The Vampire Slayer GIF by Pop TV

This is all Buffy’s fault, she was the first of the really kick-ass female superheroes ( I’m only half joking 🙃)

RedToothBrush · 20/04/2023 16:27

AmuseBish · 20/04/2023 10:51

The strength of the person spiking that ball is absolutely key to the injury. Of course the person being male in this situation would have had a far higher risk of causing serious injury than a female person.

Presumably this risk was assessed when they allowed mixed-sex volleyball and deemed acceptable by the organisers.
If they neglected to assess the risk then they are at fault.

So this bloke has the option to compete in a mixed sex category but chooses not to, at the expense of a woman who couldn't play and a woman he hurt due to his significantly stronger body which would be in contravention of mix sex rules due to a known risk to female players?

Am I getting this right?

Aargh, there’s a bit missing from my post.🤦‍♀️

I meant Buffy’s the earliest kick-ass female superhero of the modern era of/fascination with petite actresses pretending to seriously beat up male villains.

ISaySteadyOn · 20/04/2023 17:34

To be fair though, Buffy has supernatural kickass powers because she's the Slayer.

I see what you mean 🤔 Then I’m going to blame Black Widow instead 😬

But I really am getting tired of the trend for showing teeny tiny size 0 actresses kicking the shit out of men in TV and film. I think that’s why I liked Cara Dune in The Mandalorian S1, Gina Carano (a former MMA fighter) looked like she had a more realistic chance of hand to hand fighting with men. I’m also giving Katee Sackoff (as her ‘replacement’, Bo-Katan Kryze) a dispensation because the character fights in powered armour.

But having personal experience of how negatively it can go for a woman when men are stronger than me, I wish popular culture didn’t tell girls/women that they are physically strong enough to defend themselves if attacked by men.

YouJustDoYou · 20/04/2023 17:59

It's disgusting and disgraceful.

WarriorN · 20/04/2023 18:37

Horrific

KalimbaMoon · 20/04/2023 19:01

This lady’s testimony was very powerful indeed. Why is a PP brushing this off as something that could have happened anyway? If a sportswoman is injured by another woman, then okay, put it down to bad luck. But when a sportswoman is injured by a male, you have to ask yourself to what extent she is effectively collateral damage. We all want to be kind. But no woman should be injured by a male in sport because the male shouldn’t be there in the first place, or even want to be. How can a TW feel any pleasure or satisfaction beating natal women? Females are weaker than males and more vulnerable to injury. Doesn’t matter how many hormones they’re taking, TW have a massive advantage.

Dumbo12 · 20/04/2023 20:49

I don't understand why a man, who then decides that he is a trans woman, feels the need to participate in a sport that he did not excel in as a man. It's almost as if he thinks it will give him an advantage.....

Boiledbeetle · 20/04/2023 21:02

I wonder if at any point prior to deciding the man with lady feels could play with actual real women anyone thought to do a risk assessment as to whether it was safe for the actual real women for him to play?

Or did they completely go with the TWAW stance and ignored their duty of care.

It would be 100% male-centred. It probably didn’t even cross their minds to consider the women while they fell over themselves trying to accommodate his wishes.

Boiledbeetle · 20/04/2023 21:49

@LowFlyingDucks I suspect that is the case. Zero fucks given about the welfare of the women.
