Great initiative from Sisters Salon a local women's group in Brighton asking for support for three practical local policies from candidates in the May election. They are pushing to get questions on this in upcoming hustings. Also supplying postcards with the policies printed on them:

  1. Commission single-sex services for women subjected to male violence
  2. Develop a Girls Inclusion toolkit for schools to ensure our city’s schools are a safe and empowering space for girls to learn and thrive.
  3. Consider all policies, commissions and budgets in terms of sex equality……and their impact on women and girls.

Good model questions to ask of candidates in the local elections generally.

Take action for women & girls! Who are we? We are a diverse group of women who live and work in Brighton & Hove. We run a monthly discussion and activist group. We have no religious or party political affiliation. What are we asking for? We are asking...

These are very similar to the campaign that Women's Aid has been asking women to take part in in areas where local elections are taking place:

For the local elections in May 2023, we are asking councils to do three things to tackle domestic abuse in their local areas:
Learn – ask your council leader or cabinet member for community safety to visit your local refuge or community service. Meet the amazing women that work tirelessly to support survivors. If you need help finding who that is, please email [email protected].
Commit - Include a dedicated section in your manifesto titled: Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) and domestic abuse. This must include committing to prioritising funding of specialist services and increasing support for Black and minoritised women in your area.
Do - Appoint a VAWG champion within the council. They’ll help to hold the council to account on tackling VAWG in your local area and speak up for survivors.
