Kids TV programmes to avoid

JeannieDark · 11/04/2023 13:24

I have a 5 and a 7 year old so we haven't come across any tv programmes captured by gender woo yet but I'm conscious that we are getting to the point where we might. Are there any tv programmes that you aware of that we would be well steering clear of if we want to avoid gender ideology for our kids. Thanks

Somebody on another thread mentioned Owl House on Disney+ after the first season. There's also a thread about a new episode of Ridley Jones on Netflix where a buffalo comes out as non binary (really)

PuttingDownRoots · 11/04/2023 13:50

CBBC programme (import from Australia) First Day... drama about a Transgender girl starting High School with no one knowing then finding out.

Singleandproud · 11/04/2023 13:56

I was the Owl House poster.

I believe the Skullduggery books have trans characters but that's for older children.

But almost all of the Bake offesque competition shows which my DD loves have trans / NB people in it with the rest of the cast trying desperately to use the correct pronoun or refusing and just using their name which means the syntax never sounds right. Funny how they've managed to include them but people with disabilities or those that are BAME are still under represented.

Xiaoxiong · 11/04/2023 13:57

It's a while away for kids your ages, but the reboot of Sabrina the Teenage Witch has a transboy character that has a story line that is pretty odd, if you're a trans supporter. Female character with intensely sexist and homophobic father, bullied by the football team at school for gender non-conformity - no surprise they aren't keen on being a girl. Then they want to be on the basketball team and try out alongside their male friend Harvey who is tall, but they are only 5'1" so Sabrina has to use literal magic to make her friend able to get onto the team, and zap, suddenly Theo is one of the guys with no further exploration of how someone 5'1" might get onto the team without magical help!

Also Babysitters club and for teens the new Craft and Moxie

Stellanotbud · 11/04/2023 14:03

Just came on to say the new babysitters club & the books.
My dc older 9 & 11 & also wondering what not to watch & read..

Stellanotbud · 11/04/2023 14:06

Ps @JeannieDark sorry to jump on the coattails of your thread I've been wondering the same for my older dc.. Skulduggery books noted!

Singleandproud · 11/04/2023 14:31

Honestly, Id stick to the classics Tom and Jerry, Jetsons, flintstones Looney Toons, scooby doo etc as its in every part of modern media. Anything made more than 7 years ago.

Netflix have an LGBT under current in all of their own programmes. I have no issue with the LGB generally but actually I don't see why shows for children can't just focus on friendships and familial relationships opposed to romantic either hetero or homo sexual let alone introducing gender ideology.

ResisterRex · 11/04/2023 14:34

Ridley Jones

Pre-school animation ‘Ridley Jones’: character comes out as NB (ffs) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/4760231-pre-school-animation-ridley-jones-character-comes-out-as-nb-ffs

Stellanotbud · 11/04/2023 14:39

@Singleandproud i agree. A lot of the newer programmes seem to be pushing certain demographics like trans & you have to wonder that their agenda really is.. There is a major pushback in the US at the moment & I wonder will this filter into tv again.

Avoid Blues Clues, there is an episode depicting a character with mastectomy scars, celebrated as part of a Pride episode.

Crikey, I avoid that one anyway just because it's annoying but it's aimed at really young kids, there's no need for it to be covering this.

I love the skullduggery books. There is a non binary character who is gender fluid. They are a
minor character and their friends note the issue of having to figure out which pronouns to use at any given time. Also, just so you know a lot of the characters are bisexual (and use that term not pansexual).

i love the books and am GC and the gender fluid character doesn’t bother me. If you want to avoid them, you can read the series up to the first 9 books. The series ties itself up then, but then continues with many of the main characters into the second phase. It’s a great series (in my opinion) and I would hate of one character to put people off.

Stellanotbud · 11/04/2023 16:51

Thanks for that @DevilinaCardigan . My dc loved the Murder Most Unladylike series & the main character daisy turns out to be gay..

Littlesprouts · 11/04/2023 17:30

Ah Single I didn't want to derail that thread but found it a bit sad really. A kids show being co-opted by a generation of avatars unwilling to grow up.

StinkerTroll · 11/04/2023 17:34

The skulduggery books are phenomenal

Moonandstarz · 09/06/2023 14:43

Bumping... Also aware of the Babysitter Club. Dc 11, 8 & 7.

Moonandstarz · 09/06/2023 14:43

Can books also be listed. Tia.

So the series is inappropriate for preteens bc if that, in your view?

Hazel's crush on Alexander was a big plot point in Jolly Foul Play especially, is that inappropriate too, in your view?

Do you oppose Disney films for kids, given romance is a big plot point of most of the princess films?

What about kids' anime like Sailor Moon, which has a lesbian couple as characters (though the straight relationship between Sailor Moon and her boyfriend is given much more attention) would that also be inappropriate, in your view?

user9637 · 10/09/2025 14:55

The problem with older shows is having awful over sexualised sexist caricatures of women. Unfortunately the number of shows my kids watch are limited as a result. Maybe less screen is a good thing?

Zombie thread!

It’s a zombie apocalypse at the moment.

lcakethereforeIam · 10/09/2025 16:29

Yes. Think someone's got bored on reddit.

Eta This thread is relatively sprightly in comparison.
