Bringing kids to Let Women Speak - too risky?

I'll be in London tomorrow with my young kids, one in a stroller, and have been thinking about taking the opportunity to go to Let Women Speak, even just from a distance. Would I be mad bringing my kids with me? DH would be there too so he could take them away from any crowds. I don't know what to expect as I've only seen the scenes from previous events on Twitter.

I really hope we'll be able to get back to that, @cariadlet. As it is, the thugs are obviously rattled.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 08/04/2023 16:09

(If any of the Misogynist Monitors object to my use of the word thugs, all the behaviour I've seen from the protestors has been very thuggish).

IwantToRetire · 09/04/2023 00:28

As others have said if you are in the area stroll past and have a look.

Based on last week's event the police had stepped up attendance because it went badly wrong the previous event ie police not doing their job. And of course there has been all the publicity about the auditor filming the police letting TRAs shout and scream outside a meeting for lesbians.

So fingers crossed the Met will do their job as they must be aware that KJK will be taking part and they wouldn't want to risk anything similar to the NZ police failures.

So I supect (hope) that the problem may be the noise, words and dress code of the TRAs that might put you and your children off.

Either way hope you have a good day out.

From twitter:

Natalie was afraid to come to #letwomenspeak and reached out for help on Twitter. Our amazing community met her and travelled in with her. I’m so pleased she made it. I feel so proud of what we’ve created.

How did it go today. I cant find a thread. I am sure there must be one. Could someone post the link.

thanks

(Hope OP and children were okay)

Really well, plenty of police & no sign of the psychos.

dimorphism · 09/04/2023 20:12

The woman (so sorry can't remember her name off the top of my head - I did sign the petition at the time) who was treated so appallingly and whose life was put at risk by Princess Grace hospital gave a very powerful speech at LWS today. I would recommend that everyone watch it if nothing else.

What happened to her was absolutely appalling in every way. I'd like very much to know if the staff member who walked in on her, breaching her dignity and all professional codes of conduct, was disciplined.

Yes it's too risky, and it would be irresponsible.

My kids are veteran protesters. But my rule is nothing that attracts a counter protest. So we gave the Glasgow one a swerve. Turned out, it would have been OK but better safe than sorry.

Here's the story about the "fascist baby". I saw someone mention that the same woman was involved in the incident where a black Jamaican man was called a Nazi and told of all the 'foreigners' present he was 'the most foreign of all'.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11235021/Trans-activist-called-father-fascist-claims-protecting-friend.html

I thought it was established on the other thread that the woman probably said "You're the most BORING of all". I think that was the conclusion that posters came to.

Was that the woman they wouldn't treat because they couldn't guarantee female carers?

It looks like it was a very successful day today. We didn't end up going as I was too nervous of any trouble and felt it wasn't a reasonable risk. I am disappointed we didn't go but I'm so happy for all the women who go to have their voices heard.

I did give JKR some cash though by buying merch at Platform 9 & 3/4 - from little acorns!

And yet, if OP did bring her children today, it would have been very safe. Completely safe.

It always pays to check before stopping to listen, and if you have them there to position yourself to get away quickly if the protestors come late, but today, like so many before the last couple, would have been perfectly fine.

FKATondelayo · 09/04/2023 21:36

I went today. It was really safe, lots of police and not many TRAs. If you approach from Marble Arch you get a good view of what's happening and can make a call.

So happy to see a lot more younger women than on previous occasions. Some women brought their teen daughters. Resigned to see quite a lot more men - I guess it did feel safer with some blokes there. Only downside was a few youtubers and conspiracy loons (Lozza Fox, Piers Corbyn among them). Posie shouted at one of the Youtubers for asking a woman to move out of the way of the camera - making it clear that the woman's view was the priority - not him.

Bláthannabuí · 09/04/2023 22:19

I gather from twitter that the TRAs are aiming for the PPs Belfast event for the big counter rally.

IwantToRetire · 09/04/2023 23:27

Well that's okay as it seemed the best thing for your your children. How can any of know in advance what the TRAs and / or the police are going to do when women meet together.

But your decision not to go illustrates that whatever they claim they are demonstrating for, what they are wanting to achieve is intimidate and silence women.

Hope you had a good day, and enjoy the video.

IwantToRetire · 10/04/2023 21:48

Just to add as there isn't a thread on this last event, that I have now watched the full video and was really pleased to see how upbeat it was ie no tension created by protestors.

And so good that some young women felt strongly enough they wanted to speak. (Did wonder after whether there will be repercussions.)

Also, and not being mean, but in the spirit of the event, maybe women from campaign groups who have spoken about their campaign on the previous occassion, could wait until there are no new (to speaking) women wanting a chance to talk to other women.

But also, it was really irritating that even though KJK asked men to stand back, some men still pushed to the front of the circle. Not only showing they had no understanding of the event, and just displayed their entitlement, but also, showing the complete like of good manners at an event, which is if you are taller than others you stand at the back because you can see over the heads of those not as tall.

Complete fail by men on public display.

cariadlet · 11/04/2023 03:11

Totally agree about tall men standing in front of women.
It's irritating enough when it happens at a gig. Really shouldn't be happening at SFW.

Joy! 😒

I wonder if the PSNI will do a decent job of policing this? They have plenty of experience at dealing with violent protest/riots but are also pretty sexist so I can’t work out how they’re likely to behave. I want them to do their jobs and protect LWS but I’m not confident they’ll take things seriously, despite what happened in NZ.
