Canada to ban protests, impact on women’s rights.

I just saw this video linked on Twitter, suggesting Canada wants to make it a crime, with a $25000 fine, to protest or to say anything offensive about the 2SLGBTQI+ community (I’m quoting the letters, I don’t know when 2S made it to the front). Given that Canada has characterised anyone campaigning about GC women’s rights as anti-trans, this is extremely worrying in its implications for half of the population.

How is it possible that in countries with a long democratic history there is no one in power who double checks that and say « um, only a small number of formerly democratic countries have done something like this, and none of them turned out well… » ?

I will just add, I’m not advocating for the right to be insulting about any community (one I am part of), but concerned about what they can characterise as falling under this law.

Well, that's horrifying. But not altogether surprising. Canada is becoming a totalitarian state.

Turing into a form of theocracy. Theocratic governments prioritise submission to demands justified by a mandated belief, over human rights.

Welcome to Canada, twinned with Gilead.

ArabellaScott · 05/04/2023 09:40

Canada terrifies me.

Who is this person speaking in the clip, and what is the context, OP?

Thwy are talking about no act of intimidation or threat within 100 m of 'the property'. What property?

Also, is there a definition of "act of intimidation or threat" in legislation?

The government froze the bank accounts of people protesting forced vaccination last year. Democracy and free speech have been on shaky ground in Canada for a while.

Yes that was scary. And I'm saying that as someone who is vaccinated.

nilsmousehammer · 05/04/2023 10:30

Ah here come the gulags.

They're going to need a lot more prisons, and this still will not stop women fighting back.

Will make the rest of the world increasingly convinced that Canada (and New Zealand) are run by total madmen.

FOJN · 05/04/2023 10:47

Mao would be proud. Surely the Canadians won't accept this?

One of the tweets read, "big sibling is watching you". 😂

That's bonkers. I too am very pro vaccination.

Even nutbars who publish deliberate lies shouldn't have their bank accounts interfered with surely. That's a creeping dictatorship.

Nothing to stop the government doing this to trade unionists for example . Very much a double edged sword.

Canada is even crazier than NZ. Thank god I live in the UK.

Rainbowshit · 05/04/2023 11:18

Canada has lost the plot. I'm terrified Scotland is heading down the same path.

Sorry for thé delay! It’s Kristyn Wong-Tam MPP, a member of the Ontario NDP (New Democratic Party). Wong-Tam represents Toronto Centre. The party as a whole is behind it, KW-T was presenting it. Wong-Tam is the party’s spokesperson for 2SLGBTQI+. The NDP is urging the government to table this as a bill.

The « property » in question is any venue hosting a drag show, including libraries etc.

Ontario NDP urges legal protections for drag performances

Ontario's NDP is urging the government to create community safety zones that would protect drag performers and LGBTQ communities.

The clip's too short, but with the OP's update, I imagine it's just protesting drag queen story time.

There appear to be no end of people in Canada willing to promote dodgy practices around children.

Datun · 05/04/2023 11:44

Making it illegal for parents to protest sexualised men being around children?

What could possibly go wrong.

I think the use of the word « protest » suggests that just turning up with a placard will be counted as an act of harassment. I assume confirmation will come when it’s discussed in government.

I found this interesting (from the article ):

« Statistics Canada figures show a 64 per cent rise in police-reported hate crimes motivated by sexual orientation, jumping from 258 in 2020 to 423 in 2021. »

I would be fascinated to see that broken down and if it’s really about sexual orientation, or if they are considering anything LGBTQ related to be « sexual orientation ».

Drag queen story hour is supposed to be about helping the trans community gain acceptance in society.
In practice they are seeking the power to criminalise anyone who doesn't agree with them and wants to use their right to protest it.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 05/04/2023 12:58

Except for protests against lesbians having single-sex gatherings. I would imagine those are still acceptable.

Of course. Because in the Batshitocracy of Canada, lesbians are same gender attracted and any group having a single sex gathering would be exclusionary and not Proper Lesbians, not worthy of protection under legislation and all too worthy of being protested against.

nepeta · 05/04/2023 17:14

I understood from a tweet that the party behind this proposal is not currently in power so this would not immediately become a law.
What are the consequences if someone expresses hatred at women or at men? At old people? Do the alphabet people have privileges that no other group is allowed?

I don't know the Canadian legal situation, but in some other places hate laws fail to gover sexism and misogyny completely.
