Women in tech fired at end of maternity leave, says Didlaw partner Elizabeth McGlone

Why am I not surprised by this? It's almost like the technology industry, for all its "transwomen are women" spouting, knows exactly what a woman is when it comes to layoff time. When materialist feminists say that women are oppressed because of our reproductive capacity, this is the kind of oppression we mean.

I was made redundant two weeks before returning from maternity leave. Gave up breastfeeding to prep for the return. Employer entirely unbothered.

Charity sector, for what it's worth.

CuriouslyDifferent · 04/04/2023 22:16

Not a tech sector thing I recognise after being in it for about 35 years.

I generally find that the smaller companies once you’ve proven yourself to them - and what tech can do for them - money is no object, especially if you ‘get’ their business.

the larger companies - generally pay bad, but also know better and how much it costs if they get this simple stuff wrong.

Yep my experience too of a tech company. Would never apply to work for an IT company now. HR can say what they like, but when it comes to it, the managers fire people who do not look like them.

Quite a few tech companies overhired when lockdown hit, when suddenly demand for our services spiked. We are seeing a correction in the form of layoffs. It doesn't surprise me at all that this employment law solicitor is seeing mat leave returners overrepresented in layoffs.

I have name changed for obvious reasons

I was made redundant not long after returning to work. My maternity cover (a man) was kept on with a title change while my role was made redundant. Fin tech sector.

I used didlaw and they were amazing, got me a settlement twice that initially offered by my company. I wouldn’t wish anyone in my position but if you were, would advise to use them. They got the company to pay all their legal fees too.

Maybe we work in different areas in tech.

most of the companies I deal with - can’t get or retain staff. I haven’t heard of a single tech layoff, that wasn’t on the basis of competence.

That’s awful, I’m so sorry. I know how hard it is to stop bf. 😭

This is terrible. I'm at the OU taking my first modules with a view to retraining in IT right now, should I even bother getting a computing degree? My current role would never do this. I'm not done having kids yet.

Jobs in computing exist outside of the tech industry. Universities, the NHS, Met Office all have jobs for data scientists and systems administrators.

It is a big field. Opsec considerations demand that I not be too specific.

Got made redundant after returning ro my public sector IT job. I know a few it's happened to. Though, restructures are so frequent it's almost inevitable.
Argued that they caused my role to appear redundant by not bothering to arrange cover, and allowing others in the same role to do sweet f.a. for a year while I was off.
Got a settlement as it was too emotionally hard to go all the way to tribunal.
I understand it happens an awful lot.
Am now in a role on half the salary because my confidence was shot. I feel OK about it because i feel i need a break from management nonsense but sometimes, as a feminist, it stings.
