This article is in the World section of the Times today:

I started a thread but it’s sinking. I posted another link on mine as well. I’m not fussed - better to have two than for this to be missed.

Igneococcus · 14/03/2023 08:34

Sorry @BettyFilous I didn't see that one.

Thank you for the link.

Here’s the link I posted on the other thread.

Another recent article from late February with background on the debate at government level:

Macron’s equality minister faces revolt over trans policy.

She seems to have added the erosion of traditional roles based on sex into the argument that people cannot change sex just as they might change a shirt.

It is a pity she has done that I think because you can say there is no such thing as being able to change sex while at the same time allowing that women can have any number of roles, including traditionally masculine ones, and vice versa.

ArabellaScott · 14/03/2023 09:09

'the mother of a 12-year-old transgender boy said she planned to sue her council in the Paris suburbs after he was put in the girls’ dormitory on a children’s skiing holiday.'

I agree.

I also found the article confusing. Is there a translation of the original piece anywhere?

Forester1 · 14/03/2023 11:54

Thanks for sharing - the more this is debated in different countries the better

HagoftheNorth · 14/03/2023 12:29

Agree ScrollingLeaves & Spartacus, she’s worried about the erosion of de-based roles, and I’m worried that GI insists that if you don’t sufficiently fit sex-based stereotypes, then you can only truly be yourself if you change your sex. My daughter is constantly told at school that wearing trousers & a short hairstyle means she’s actually a transboy. That’s not freedom to be who you are!
i’m also glad that discussion is starting in France too

I can hardly believe that we’ve somehow come full circle to a point where a 12 year old girl with short hair and wearing trousers is told that she must want to be a boy. These poor children.

So according to the article, the mother is upset that the school DIDN’T affirm the child’s new “identity” 😵‍💫 and that they actually adhered to the safeguarding rules on overnight trips and single sex spaces? 😵‍💫

It's a 'tract' that you can buy for just under 3 euros.

rhywlodes · 14/03/2023 13:27

Sorry, posted too soon. Looks like she's a Figaro journalist:
www.lefigaro.fr/vox/medias/eugenie-bastie-sauver-la-difference-des-sexes-20221212
It's behind a paywall unfortunately.

VitaminX · 14/03/2023 14:28

I can't read French but for anyone who can: archive.md/RKhhj

It's easy to get round paywalls for articles, you just have to archive the url.

BlessedKali · 14/03/2023 15:49

Yes i can't work this one out....

''This week the mother of a 12-year-old transgender boy said she planned to sue her council in the Paris suburbs after he was put in the girls’ dormitory on a children’s skiing holiday.''

Is this a biological boy or a biological girl?

It still shocks me that we have got to a point where you cant even make sense of a sentence in a newspaper.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 14/03/2023 15:52

'the mother of a 12-year-old transgender boy said she planned to sue her council in the Paris suburbs after he was put in the girls’ dormitory on a children’s skiing holiday.'

I'm confused about what sex a "transgender boy" is, and why a mother would want a girl in a boys' dorm. Unless the problem was lack of separate accommodation for a girl with gender issues? In which case I'm willing to sympathise.

Fladdermus · 14/03/2023 15:53

Blimey. Fancy planning to sue a school because they refused to put a biological female in a dorm full of teenage males over night. World's gone barking mad.
