SNP leadership contest is 'reset opportunity' for Gender Reform law

Well this is interesting.

www.heraldscotland.com/politics/23377650.snp-leadership-contest-reset-opportunity-gender-reform-law/

Are Labour finally getting the message about how deeply unpopular the HRR bill is? They now admit women had legitimate concerns?! 🤔

Mr Sarwar said the race to replace Nicola Sturgeon was a “reset opportunity” for the entire debate.
“I think if we're being honest with ourselves, nobody feels like they've won.
“Everybody feels like they've lost. I don't think anyone in our trans community feels like they're any more protected since the passing of the GRR Bill.
“And I don't think any of the women that had legitimate concerns feel any more protected or reassured since the passing of the bill.

They're undermining the SNP and using the GRR to do it. But Labour in Scotland supported the GRR and WM Labour is still falling over itself to avoid defining women. Labour are hoping women will be swayed by platitudes. Most women are too smart for that.

nilsmousehammer · 12/03/2023 07:30

I wouldn't trust any left party on this further than I can spit.

They will hope that if they make a few placating noises they can force it through and once done can spit on women without difficulty. A few token amendments will not save that bill from being a car crash or get back the voters they have lost.

Oppressing women is not a vote winner. Either a party is there to exist in the light of its own pure and righteous thoughts, or it's there to represent the electorate. Pick one.

Igneococcus · 12/03/2023 08:09

“And I don't think any of the women that had legitimate concerns feel any more protected or reassured since the passing of the bill.

Did he think the aim of the bill was to make women feel more protected?

Datun · 12/03/2023 08:27

So Starmer says GRR is not a priority for him?

Why don't these politicians realised it's just screaming 'cowardice' to absolutely everyone?

And the bill hasn't passed. It's been blocked.

Does he have even the slightest understanding of what it's about and what's happened?

ResisterRex · 12/03/2023 08:50

I don't trust them one bit on this. Jess Phillips this week was the absolute last straw for me. I don't believe they're rowing back at all.

Signalbox · 12/03/2023 08:55

Asked during the visit if he would pursue self-id, he said: “It's not a priority for the Labour Party. I've made absolutely clear what my priorities are: the five missions that I set out.

Starmer is all over the place with this. I thought he previously said he was committed to updating the GRA. Now it’s “not a priority”. I wish he’d make his bloody mind up!

Foreversearch · 12/03/2023 09:19

@ResisterRex I found the recording of Jess reading out the names and whilst I wish she had said trans girl, she named them in a way that made it clear it was separate to the list of women.

I had always expected Jess to name any transwomen, but to acknowledge them separately. I also expect her to include any transmen in the list of women.

This was a young person brutally murdered and, irrespective of sex, I have no issue with their name being on record in a separate and distinct category. We don’t yet know the details of the motive for the murder, but regardless a young life has been needlessly lost.

I am not going to debate this as I respect your right to disagree.

I am gender critical, but I am also aware that the broadening of the trans umbrella to include AGP etc. has, and is, harming the small group of people with gender dysphoria as well as women and girls.

Political parties are waking up to how badly they have misjudged their TWAW stance and are rowing back. Ironically Adam Graham/Isla Bryson and Nicola Sturgeon have actually helped make political leaders re-think their position by showing exactly what can happen. Between now and the next general election holding politicians to account for their past words and actions is going to be very interesting to watch.

We now know there has to be a debate in parliament about the EA2010 definition of sex. An amendment to the Act is a relatively simple change. The debate however is going to reveal a lot about individual MPs, including those who are absent.

ResisterRex · 12/03/2023 09:26

@Foreversearch I respectfully disagree. For one thing, the year didn't correspond with the list. It was plainly performative. The list is of women murdered due to their sex, so including males is a new low even for Labour. But we can't discuss it on here (the thread on it was deleted) so this can't go much further anyway.

That's very interesting indeed.

Perhaps it's a cautious step back, so he can gauge the reaction and decide which side of the fence to lean towards?

Or an attempt to depressurise the issue, drop a single line on "Reviewing the GRA" into the manifesto and then go full TRA when he comes to power.

Yup, that's definitely another option.

Sorry Keir, gonna need to see a bit more. I don't trust you as far as I could throw you, and that's on you.

Rainbowshit · 12/03/2023 12:09

Agree they haven't done enough to persuade me they will actually protect women's rights. However I think their comments are quite significant in that they are clearly aware how much public opposition there is to the GRR.

We need to keep up the pressure on them.

I wrote to all my MSPs almost daily in the final weeks of the GRR debate in Holyrood.felt like a bit of a waste of time but perhaps not...

Good point. I'm going to write to my local Labour candidate.

From Wales this weekend (pictures in link):

twitter.com/wrnwales/status/1635062315761700864?s=46&t=WHoOZ_3Kv5G6-FyQuvE0LQ

"The Welsh Labour conference took place this weekend

Here’s @ WelshYoungLab on the conference stage proudly saying ‘only shit on Tories and Terfs’

Misogyny in plain sight - what are you doing about it @ PrifWeinidog?"

Sounds like he just wants to kick it down the road, win the next election then bring it back. Probably to our detriment. If I get my way this will be the overriding question in the run up to the next election. I'm hoping at least one journo will be able to get kier to define woman and define who can use women only spaces. Also defining sex and gender so it's clear as crystal what kier wants.

nilsmousehammer · 13/03/2023 16:15

I agree. They've figured out it's unpopular, so they will make it sound like nothing very important to them until they're in power, and then crack on as planned.

Got that t shirt, Kier. Got it in the Blair days.

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 16:16

I'm just sharing this interview with Ash Regan. Very interesting. She seems - I'm sorry - far too down to earth, honest, honourable and sensible to get very far in Scottish politics.

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 16:17

Yes, Labour have done a fair amount of flirting with gc ideas. When it comes to crunch, though, they're sleekit bastards on self ID.

As, to be fair, are the Conservatives, too. Lots of noise about knowing what a woman is - so far little actual movment in clarifying that in law.

Artisticpaint · 13/03/2023 16:18

Not good enough Labour, the Tories or the communists or the SDP have still got my vote.

ArabellaScott · 13/03/2023 16:19

Er, sorry, I really didn't mean to call Labour politicians 'bastards'. It was an unthinking noun addition to 'sleekit', meant as a criticism of the policies overall, not individual people. Sorry.
