Pre-school animation ‘Ridley Jones’: character comes out as NB (ffs)

I’ve just seen the latest episode of the Netflix pre-school animation ‘Ridley Jones’. In ‘Happy Herd Day’ the bison character Fred comes out to his grannie as ‘non binary’…’and I use they/them pronouns’. 🙄

I’m not kidding.

This is for ages 2-5.

Bison Fred is all discombulated and sad when his grannie calls him ‘Winifred’ and he decides with his friends’ encouragement that he can only be himself (oops, themself..) if he tells her he’s not her granddaughter any more, and he’s now Fred. Non-binary Fred, with they/them pronouns.

Naturally, things are much better when Fred is ‘out’ & ‘they’ can lead a charge of bison cheerfully at last. Hurrah. 😡

The animators are moaning on Twitter that this fabulous breakthrough (the first non-binary character in a pre-school show) is not getting the usual Netflix marketing. Well, boohoohoo.

Little kids should not be introduced to the concept of pronouns & non-binary - why label them & change their pronouns at this early age?

You can watch this bullshit (or bison shit) yourselves if you have Netflix. It’s a real shame, as the animation is good quality, and Ridley Jones is an adventurous, courageous girl (until she comes out as trans I suppose 🙄).

Disney+ have more questionable content than I suspected too.
One (that I know of) trans moment on the Big Hero 6 series.
Lots of “humorous” drag everywhere - especially on the short clips (Ice Age and Groot are the most recent I caught).

“Comical” sitting/falling on cone-shaped objects (that really pissed me off!).

There was a series I can’t remember the name of, where an adult male is semi-naked with “comic” butt flashing. It was something with vampires and ghosts I think.

This shit is seeping through everywhere. I’ve started putting on stuff created before 2012 only.

I wish they'd clearly label this stuff - maybe put a NO BIGOTS warning sign on it or something, whatever pleases them, so that we could avoid it.

I've blocked access to it on netflix for us now.

It being a children’s program, I don’t suppose they get to the bit where bison do what bison do and Winifred Fred finds themselves pregnant and somehow unable to opt out of their sexed body after all

I logged on to my netflix account online. There's a side menu, select account/adjust parental controls. I have a profile for the kids with access to u only and many things blocked!

May be worth writing in to explore why they chose to represent FTM as opposed to MTF, considering the below, if their aim is to increase representation of under-represented groups; one fewer female character, as opposed to one fewer male (to strategically adopt their own probable perspective on “gendered representation” & associated language).

Funny how 'non binary' always means a change of name to a male or neutral' name. Just another message that women and girls are not good enough as they are! 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Here's a tip (if you don't want to pre-watch kids tv beforehand): change the voices to a different language with genderless pronouns eg Chinese, Turkish, Finnish etc (many others?)... then no stupid pronouns, and the kids learn a new language!
