Slightly strange ... but they seem to be gaslighting?

A post appeared on the East Dulwich Forum about a week ago appealing to local residents to come and protest against TPUK who were themselves publicising a protest against drag queen storytime at the pub some time this coming weekend (I'm not sure exactly when it was planned for) but I put the link in another Mumsnet thread on this subject earlier this week.

Now there is a story in Southwark News where the pub are saying this event was never booked and never going to go ahead? It was all related to something that happened months ago.

I caught a glimpse of a thread on a local FB page saying how great it was that so many local people turned out against TPUK there today. Frustratingly can't find it now!

So ... who is telling the truth here and does anyone know what actually happened?

I have no idea but I have these screenshots saved on my phone from another discussion (I was trying to clear up confusion between Caba Baba Rave, the DQSH & Drag Brunches at the Honor Oak and whatever was scheduled in Easy Dulwich) so figured I’d add them here.

The East Dulwich events seem to be part of a series run by Clip Theatre?

It’s tomorrow, isn’t it:

Yes it seems you're right Pangolin23. I'm absolutely incensed that the likes of Laurence Fox and his nasty friends have made it impossible for rational, liberal, peaceful people like me to speak out against drag + children in public. Incensed!

Really pathetic reporting by the BBC. No attempt to explain the reasons for the protest or present it impartially:

So the Socialist Worker still managed to produce signs to protest against a protest against a non-existent event.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/03/2023 14:44

Right - posted on the proper thread this time.

I am local ish to this pub. Like the Honor Oak it is a bang average, mildly gentrified pub that is branching out in to events, good on them.

Like most locals i am baffled by the whole three ring circus this has become. Baffled as to why right wing nob heads want to turn up in the rain and shout at a closed pub, but equally baffled by the sudden and inexplicable mainstreaming of drag - no gentrified pub or middle class event seems complete these days without a very average drag act competing with your Sunday roast.

My view is if you don't like drag then don't go. If there is a genuine safeguarding concern with a venue or event then use the proper channels to report it.

LK1972 · 10/03/2023 14:45

So the pub stopped running the events due to safeguarding concerns, didn't update their website, so continued to advertise them, defends drag as an 'art form' 'cause Shakespeare' (yeah, those enlightened times when women were banned from acting), but BBC reports it all as 'silly fascists protesting against non-existent events'? Wow BBC, so 'fair and impartial', much 'no spin' Wink

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/03/2023 14:52

Umm I am not sure where you got that part of the story from? Is there a link to reported safeguarding concerns?

It's in the BBC article linked above?

'They added that CLIP had stopped running all Drag Storytime events due to "safeguarding" concerns.'

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/03/2023 17:22

Ahh CLIP, not the pub itself.

Rightsraptor · 10/03/2023 20:51

The BBC can't even get Calvin Robinson's name right.

That’s interesting.

I looked at the Clip website while in my Caba Baba Rave research mode and was surprised when I found that unlike CBR Clip actually know something about child development and usually run more run of the mill kiddy classes (whereas CBR are just random adults from the club/cabaret scene who are new mums and thought they’d have a go a daytime event involving babies, no prior interest in children nor relevant qualifications).

I’d like to know if Clip’s safeguarding ‘concern’ is regarding the children who are their core customer base or if they are worried about the safety of the drag performer (what with all this rotten old terves and god bothering tv personalities about…

Maybe they just got a lot of requests for ticket refunds after the Caba Baba Rave story went viral and gave everyone a new WTF? moment about re: adult entertainers performing in front of babies and toddlers?

And yes, I agree - turning up to protest is pointless and unnecessarily inflammatory - much better to document as much as you can and contact whichever authorities have the jurisdiction to investigate properly.
