Complaining about 'assigned female at birth'

howmanybicycles · 08/03/2023 19:17

My son (year 9) attended a presentation at school today offered by an external organisation. The woman used the term 'assigned female at birth' which I consider to be a slur. I'm tempted to complain but wanted to get my facts behind me first. Has this, in our current anti-female dystopia, become an 'accepted term'? Is there anything I can quote which shows the damage this sort of obfuscating language does?

She also told the kids that what you were 'assigned' was what the 'doctor' said when you were born which is quite a micro-aggression towards women, I thought, given that the baby's sex is actually recognised by the (usually female) midwife and not the (often male) doctors!

I've found this safeschoolsallianceuk.net/ which is a great support. I'll keep looking for the DfE stuff

A long time back I believe someone wrote to the college of midwives (may even have been a FoI request) to ask how they 'assigned' sex and to what policy and procedure.

I think they had to admit that there wasn't one, but stopped short of adding 'because it's obvious and we all bloody know, usually before the birth'.

PermanentTemporary · 10/03/2023 06:44

Identified female at birth is no better to me. It still avoids the question of who is doing the identifying, and promotes the idea that your sex is what you can get other people to think you are. About a newborn baby! It's ludicrous.

Similar but different...I started reading Unwell Women by Elinor Cleghorn, only got as far as the preface and she says the same thing. Can't read it anymore, what a waste of a book token!

Persevere with the book. I nearly threw it across the room reading the preface, but I think that's been added subsequently to appease the offended, getting into the actual book now and it's much better.

I didn't understand until recently why people were using 'assigned'. It sounds a bit official and medical. Until you realise how absurd the implications that it is an arbitrary designation.

How about:
'The bone was assigned to be fractured' or 'the wound assigned to be bleeding' ?

It sounds as if you're making it up.

Coincidentally...

anythinginapinch · 10/03/2023 07:38

So people who murder (infanticide) girl babies must be victims of a medical professional who refused to reassign their baby's sex when asked to because the parents wanted a boy.

Justme56 · 10/03/2023 07:47

China’s one child policy led to massive ‘sex selective’ abortions. Somehow they seemed to know exactly which ones were female.

nilsmousehammer · 10/03/2023 11:34

I've just seen a charity appeal on tv for girls to save them from forced marriage and dying in childbirth through being far too young.

This is not happening to male children who identify as girls. It's like there's a bloody great enormous difference, that's hugely significant to being able to meet the needs of these female humans.

Guys your comments are all really helpful. I am hoping to have some mental space this weekend to formulate a proper letter to the head. This really is not good enough for our kids. On the plus side my son sent me the 'what is a woman' sketch this morning and told me he identifies as someone who does not need to do homework. It has delighted me to know that he sees this for the dangerous nonsense that it is. For anyone who's not seen it, here is the sketch https://youtube.com/shorts/B7lH3tllM5s?feature=share

My employer, a well-known UK teaching hospital, now records patient demographics in two boxes, 'legal sex' (further info button describes this as the sex on documents such as driving licence) and 'sex assigned at birth' (info button describes this as the sex assigned to the patient by a doctor or birthing professional). No box for actual biological sex though, why would a hospital need that? Makes me stabby.

ReunitedThorns · 10/03/2023 13:37

Say that this is really confusing for children as they were told the sex of their unborn siblings after a baby scan and now people (like Dawn Butler) are claiming that a baby is born without sex until it is assigned.

Doctors don't rummage around a box of penises or vulvas and stick them on the newborn.

Thanks for sharing, love that 😂

Here's an interesting article about some who really was assigned the wrong sex at birth:

www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2014/aug/22/experience-birth-certificate-says-woman-is-a-man

This is one of many instances where an official accidentally ticked the wrong sex box, and is an example who a piece of paper can lie about biological fact.

birchtreeglow · 10/03/2023 16:01

@ReunitedThorns Thanks for that link. It sent me searching and it would appear that the registrar, wrote female, but then deliberately ticked the box for Male!

Another book I'm just going to have to buy!

Can I ask what part of the UK this is? Our primary in Scotland have just sent us an email saying there's an external organisation coming in for a Diversity discussion for the kids. I have asked them what they will be discussing but they have not told me!

I am worried that it's something along the lines of your school. In which case I don't want my daughter listening to it.

I quite like the term “assigned female at birth” as it is biologically accurate and something they can never change, however it’s very concerning that children are being taught this stuff. They wouldn’t have said “assigned female at birth” unless they were talking about gender ideology. I wonder what else she said to the children and why on earth this is being allowed?

I mean I had the harmony test so biological sex (not gender) was discovered through dna profiling before even being observed in utero. I don’t think anyone mentioned it at birth.

On my harmony test paperwork, I had to tick a box to say whether or not I wanted to know the gender.

Yes, I crossed it out and wrote sex. And rolled my eyes.

JacquelinePot · 04/05/2023 08:42

“assigned female at birth” is not accurate, biologically or otherwise.

This meaning of "assign" is to place in a particular category. That's not what happens.

The baby is already in the category before it's even born, and we can see this via scans/dna testing.

Isthisreasonable · 04/05/2023 08:47

My baby's sex was on their medical record 5 mths before they were born. No sorting hat required. That was the best part of 20 yrs ago.

NeverTrustAPoliceman · 04/05/2023 09:02

I found it easy to tell the sex of our DC. I didn't even need the expert help of a doctor or midwife. The one with a penis was a boy, the one with a vulva was a girl.

No idea why anyone struggles with that.

I’d have been rolling mine with you. Gosh you’d think an endeavour that could isolate and analyse foetal dna would not want to confuse sex and gender.

If I hadn’t been extremely worried about the results from a medical perspective, words would have been had!

Just goes to show - when you are vulnerable, you cannot adequately advocate for yourself (or women in general). That makes it even more important to get this shit sorted out now.

I'm afraid some of them have been captured too. My medical student daughter, about to qualify, was full of trans rights theory until fairly recently. A few months on a paediatric ward softened her stance and she started talking about social contagion. I think some of the senior doctors told her bluntly what they thought.
