Interesting discussion about why we have a patriarchal system, discussing biological differences and if they impact.

This is an archaeological/ anthropological discussion

Currently discussing a some early egalitarian cultures that's evident in archaeological studies

Not convinced it just biologically driven as evidence shows that patriarchies aren't universal

So far the mentions of gender are in terms of it being a social construct.

It is an interesting gallop through.

WarriorN · 07/03/2023 10:47

Surprising and interesting comments on the Soviet Union

Just what I thought. She spoke about the positives but made clear that it's not a model to emulate.

WarriorN · 07/03/2023 10:49

Definitely- it's key aspects such as being the first to legalise abortion

Patriarchy is different to misogyny though, and that seems like an area that needs research. Is there a link?

Unfortunately, the author, Saini, is perhaps someone who hedges her bets:

Has she written the times article ? I can't see it unfortunately.

I wasn't really getting any gender woo from the interview though

I was getting "gender" as in sex/ gender roles, the old fashioned sense.

You can't study archeology of patriarchies without wholly recognising that men are male and women are female!

She's also written a book called Inferior: The true power of women and the science that shows it which seems pretty 'women are AHF' from an invisible women slant

It was nagging at me why the name Saini was familiar so I went looking and found what it was:

Ah ok, clearly some cognitive dissonance going on!

Can't see it's like a Trojan horse....

ridiculous anecdotal waffle about Eastern Europe under communism. The pros and cons of Soviet equality were much discussed in the societies that had experienced it in immediate post Soviet era. She reduces it to a conversation in a cafe

Ultimately she's saying there's no research on patriarchies in history. So she wrote one.

If she's not quite on the ball with other things I'd like to see more research in this area from other historians.

Some of what she said about earlier societies does marry up what I've read elsewhere in feminist literature re archaeological evidence for more egalitarian or matriarchal societies.

I also think 'patriarchies' is more appropriate as it's clear that societies can be fluid and shift to and fro depending on other policies.

There's also the idea that "the patriarchy" doesn't exist (that Canadian guy but men of course love this), however it clearly does and has in history so patriarchies or patriarchal approaches / attitudes/ structures are easier to discuss from a pov of the harm they can do.
