Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Cardiff Everywoman Festival is open to men...

The Everywoman Festival seeks to empower and support women, and those assigned female at birth, on health topics that may be difficult or considered taboo to talk about.

The festival is open to anyone with an interest in womens health, irrespective of gender or sex. Whilst some of the workshops are looking at health issues for cis women and people assigned female at birth, there are workshops which are relevant for everyone.

What subjects are too taboo to be talked about openly any more, I wonder? Elaine Miller dresses up as a vagina to talk about sexual and continence issues. Davina McCall has tackled menopause. Will someone let me in on the womanly things that cannot be talked about?

This 'festival' is being sponsored by a group of private health care companies and legal firms. I wonder what they'll be trying to sell you?

God make it stop.

I forgot to add a link to the site so that you can see it in all its glory:

God the pronouns in the bio 🙄

Seems like an absolute beacon for men who want to sophisticate their fantasy lives with all the gory intimate details of female bodies - whilst being surrounded by women with their guards down.

There’ll be a demand for a whole new generation of gaffs and butt plugs inspired by that event.

IcakethereforeIam · 04/03/2023 10:31

I initially read it as being held at Incel Court, just a Freudian brain fart.

pattihews · 04/03/2023 10:54

Reading it through again, I think some of the issues do need discussing publicly. But the event is so shot-through with genderist language that it makes it look dodgy. And the fact that men are welcome adds to that feeling. The fact that it's being sponsored by private health companies and solicitors does make it seem more like a marketing than an educational opportunity.

Why isn't the NHS holding events like this? Probably because they don't want even more women bothering GPs for help and adding to the waiting lists...

Let’s be honest Patti, if the NHS held an event like this it would be just as riddled with genderist nonsense as well

BonfireLady · 04/03/2023 11:22

Interesting use of a double speak fail in plain sight:

The event is called "Everywoman" and is to support "cis women" and "those assigned female at birth". Do "those assigned female at birth" identify as an "Everywoman" now?

They might it details itself on this very point, when trans men and trans women inevitably attend... and presumably have some kind of civil war style bun fight over it all with the organisers. I should imagine it's too late to change the name of the event. Could be interesting to attend and see it all unfold. As well as hearing health advice of course.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 04/03/2023 11:40

The language is genderist but the intention is on the TERFy side, although of course the organisers are oblivious to this. It will be interesting to see how it's received.

Sorry typos... "They might find it derails itself..."

Yep, a great articulation of the unintended double speak fail.

KatMcBundleFace · 04/03/2023 12:35

I thought the programme looked quite good actually, all about the biological reality of being a woman.

The pointless pronouns aside.

I was amused by the they/ them bio though
"Coco prides herself on creating and curating, giving support, advice and mentoring with zero judgment - just pure love, and transparency"

Whoopsy the organisers misgendered them.

KatMcBundleFace · 04/03/2023 12:39

Or did Coco misgender themselves.
Oh what a tangled web......

Another great spot on double speak fail bingo! And yes, I totally agree that the programme looks fantastically informative about topics that are rooted in biology and impact the physical and mental health of women.

I should imagine that there are more examples in there for the bingo card.

Given how ostensibly inclusive it is, I'm very tempted to big it up on LinkedIn for IWD and wait to see what unfolds in the comments... And when I say tempted, I'm already composing my words in my head...

Maybe, but at least one wouldn't have suspicions that this is mainly a marketing event to make money out of women with problems.

Women and those born female??!

Men and females. That's what that means. Fuck that to the far side of fuck and then call it a taxi so it can fuck off some more. So done playing these stupid anti women games.

I read “women and those assigned female at birth” as being intended to refer to women and transmen.

It says its open to everyone irrespective of gender or sex

Draigosaurus · 04/03/2023 16:19

I agree with Kat that it looks like an interesting programme, particularly the exercise workshops focused on women’s bodies. Apart from the “dancing provocatively in high heels whilst touching yourself as empowerment” workshop. Which seems completely at odds with the other workshops on protecting your joints etc.

Coco’s biog says Coco has appeared on the Guilty Feminist podcast tour, is anyone familiar with Coco’s work from listening to the podcast?

The ticket price info doesn’t seem to be advertised on the page. If you try clicking through it looks like the ticket includes one seminar and one workshop which you have to choose in advance. The total ticket price seemed to be £10. The main stage - where the seminars are held - is located outdoors on one of the lawns. Which presumably means the whole venue - outdoor space included - is going to be off limits to local residents for the day, to stop non-ticket holders wandering up and listening to the speakers. You may be right about the organisations behind the funding of this event, as it’s difficult to see how a tenner per head is going to cover the costs of hiring the entire site for the day, if that’s what they are doing. I mean how many women are going to travel to Cardiff for the day to attend one seminar and one workshop?

Cornichiwa · 03/05/2023 12:47

Hi . Thank you for the comments in the thread and wanted to answer some of the comments.
I’m the founder of the event and a colorectal consultant and the purpose of the event is to provide education for prevention for women and signposting for those who have symptoms.

I tried to get the NHS to run the event and was told it was too expensive. I wanted to keep the tickets low cost to allow more people to access it and that is why we have sponsors. We have had to raise over £30k for this event to be held. We have offered free tickets to a wide range of community groups across Cardiff but if you feel there is a community group that may want this please contact us.

We are trying to get women of all ages coming and the wide variety of workshops hopefully to also appeal to allow young women to come who may not have problems yet but need to understand what is normal and when to ask for help.

I hope to see you there. Women’s health inequalities are present and need to be addressed and this is my way of helping that.
I think it’s going to be a great day with lots of drop in sessions that you can attend in addition to the seminars and workshops (see on the day section).

pattihews · 03/05/2023 15:00

You won't see me there. I wouldn't attend any event that advertises itself as being for women, but then includes men who identify as women.

Just out of interest, do you have a private practice? Do you work privately for any of the private healthcare companies involved?

OP posts:
porridgecake · 03/05/2023 15:31

The minute I see pronouns I just think no, not for me. Also, I question whether the people involved are really qualified professionals or just identifying as such.

Sevenbells · 03/05/2023 15:49

Yes overt pronouns gives the whole thing a feeling of being slightly delusional and groupthink, sadly, even though some of the talks sound really great ie birth trauma. Can't support it when I know what has been done and is being done to women in the name of gender ideology - I'm just not that much of a hypocrite.

Cornichiwa · 03/05/2023 16:25

No I don’t do any private practice with any of the sponsoring companies and have no plan to. I do a clinic in spire but they are not sponsoring the event.

porridgecake · 03/05/2023 16:39

The advertising talks about "cis women" and people "assigned female at birth". Do you really, as a surgeon, believe that it is possible to change sex, that sex is assigned (by someone) at birth, not fixed at conception?
I have just had a fairly serious operation and I would have been concerned if my surgeon had spoken in those terms.
