Women's Prize for Fiction - new PINK logo, urgh!

Looked to see if there's already a thread for this, but couldn't see one?

Yesterday The Women's Prize for Fiction announced a new PINK logo for March and a tie-in with a sleepwear company (pink PJs...) with the following announcement:

Pink isn't just a colour, it's an attitude.
We are SO excited to unveil our brand-new, dazzlingly pink logo to celebrate Women's History Month and International Women's Day

Here at the Women’s Prize Trust, we've joined forces with female-founded British sleep and underwear brand, Stripe & Stare, to create a limited-edition pair of vibrant pink PJs and matching knicker set in their luxuriously soft signature fabric.

Understandably (and correctly IMHO) they are getting slated on Twitter for it: twitter.com/WomensPrize/status/1630855852780339202

Honestly, WHO thought this would be a good idea??

I like it too! And I like Janelle Monae in general.

Because when you are having girly pillow fights with your girl chums on a grownup sleepover frilly knickers make it all so much more fun.

Never had a girly pillow fight in my life. Who thinks women do this? Oh, right, men, particularly men who ID as women and who think 'woman' is a stereotype and a dress and a pair of frilly knickers. And this is all linked to the women's fiction prize? Jesus wept.

Detransition Baby was nominated in 2021, to be clear.

'Reese wanted to end their games, to get hit in a way that would affirm, once and for all, what she wanted to feel about her womanhood: her delicacy, her helplessness, her infuriating attractiveness. After all, Every woman adores a Fascist.'

Really? That's what he wrote? It's a quote from Detransition Baby? It's porn. Vicious, nasty porn, too. And it got a prize?

I'm not sure I am into a song that talks by elipsis and inuendo about pink fannies. It's patently talking about the interior of a woman's vulva.

Grammarnut · 03/03/2023 15:32

Sorry, I know you are joking, ArabellaScott

So what? It's a love song to vaginas. JaNelle Monae is a lesbian so presumably she's into them. Why is that a problem?

Why would I be joking? It's a catchy tune.

It's a quote from Detransition, Baby, yep.

It was shortlisted but didn't win the prize. I've not read the book, but it has apparently quite a few references to the main protagonist enjoying domestic violence as an 'affirmation' of his womanliness.

Igmum · 03/03/2023 19:19

FFS. It's a good job women don't want to be taken seriously or do jobs or anything like that. Never mind the gender pay gap, if that's what they think of us I'm amazed we get paid at all Hmm

Somehow it doesn't surprise me from other things I've seen about being validated by sexist comments etc.

Sorry, ArabellaScott, not meaning to disparage singer you like. I thought this was a thread discussing pink being used as the colour for the Women's Fiction Prize logo, so naturally assumed the all-pink theme of Janelle's song played into that. It is a well written song and the music is catchy - and the lyrics slyly sexy (I listened agains). It's clearly about sex and being Lesbian but, given the context, I got the wrong end of the stick. Many apologies.

When you disconnect womanhood from the experience of being female, all you have is gender stereotypes.

In that world, pink and empathetic is entirely valid as the essence of womanhood.

This. This is exactly where we are at.

We are right back to ladybrains and women being whatever men tell them they are.

crosstalk · 04/03/2023 13:24

Anyone know if there's been any movement from Women's Prize Trust?

ArabellaScott · 04/03/2023 19:37

No need for apologies, Grammarnut!

We are right back to ladybrains and women being whatever men tell them they are.

And especially, women being grateful and gracious and lovely about their subjugation and stereotyping.

Relieved.
So true about ladybrains - makes me fed-up, sometimes.
