It’s World Book Day!

Which means thousands of pictures of kids dressed as Harry Potter characters being tweeted to JKR. Thus proving that despite a loud minority trying to cancel her, she’s still a hero to kids and parents alike.

My DDs are no longer at primary, so no dressing up for them. A colleague told me that one of her boys was going to be HP though. It was a popular choice throughout the years I worked in primary. As was the Boy in a Dress still a boy, just wearing a dress

Yep. I've had the sewing machine out making a last-minute Dobby costume.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 01/03/2023 21:56

DD's school doesn't do dressing up. Boo! But I am expecting to see a lot of Harry / Ron / Hermione decorated potatoes in the playground tomorrow.

I thought it was going to be Ed Balls Day Sad

Oh don't I have yet to actually send a tweet.

I have the Ed Balls tweet fear every time I think about tweeting.

Maybe one day I'll pluck up the nerve!

10 year old DS has decided he doesn’t want to be HP this year.

He’s going as Ignotus Peverell instead.

Awesome. I'm a huge Potter fan. My kids are a bit on the sensitive/young side for it yet, but absolutely looking forward to sharing it with them.

Brilliant!

Happy World Book Day, Ignotus! And everyone else.

I have a Harry heading to school tomorrow. He's actually reading the first book at the moment so Harry was the obvious costume for him. I do feel a little nervous that my kid may be making a political statement that he's unaware of.

tillyoumakeit · 02/03/2023 08:23

Yep I just said to my red haired son does he want to be a Weasley for WBD (delayed to next week at his school to coincide with a poetry workshop) - he was quite keen.

Harry Potter is not a global phenomenon because of JK Rowling's views on trans issues. It's because it's a good story about magic and adventure that appeals to a lot of people.

The majority of people across the world who like Harry Potter know nothing about JK Rowling or her views on trans issues. They are just enjoying a story about a boy wizard.

Therefore, "Small number of people try to get Harry Potter cancelled and fail" is a complete non-event.

It's neither a "win" for gender critical people, nor a "loss" for trans rights activitists. It is simply unrelated. All it means is that kids like wizards and magic.

Excellent 👍

I am more excited about International Women’s Day next week..

lifeturnsonadime · 02/03/2023 08:43

I thought you were talking about InternationalWomanFaceDay for a minute there

Oh dear 😮 Have they started already?

Just one bloody day out of 365 and they have to try to get in too?

Yep. We all know the women to be celebrated are the male ones.

😡

My son has gone in in HP pyjamas today.

That's kind of the point for me. Harry Potter is just so, so brilliant and kids continue to love it, will continue to love it, no matter how many tantrums TRA-toddlers throw on twitter.

Ok but this thread seems to have been started as some kind of middle finger to TRA's.

My point is that it doesn't make a blind bit of difference.

People are not supporting Harry Potter because of trans issues. They're supporting it because it's a great story about a boy wizard.

It could not be more unrelated and it's not a win or loss for anyone. It's just irrelevant.

some people ARE supporting harry potter because of jkrs stance, most are not because they may not notice or care about jkr, they like the story

some people are NOT supporting harry potter because of jkrs stance, most are not doing this because they still like the story
