Musselburgh Rugby Club has criticised the decision by Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) to ban transgender women from taking part in women’s contact rugby.

they say this new policy directly contradicts our values of inclusion within our wonderful game

clearly, inclusion overrides basic safety.

using their logic, why not have kids playing against adults?

Muppets!

Perhaps they’ve been benefiting from having a man or men on their team and are disappointed their advantage is being removed.

PuttingDownRoots · 21/02/2023 05:58

Girls rugby splits from boys rugby at U12 rugby. Girls cannot play with the boys after this age for safety reasons.

How can anyone take this bit of logic, they say it doesn't matter in adults?

Workerbeep · 21/02/2023 08:10

This is wrong but I’m not surprised.

Tbh I think rugby should be allowed to die out.

With all the repercussions emerging now, I wouldn’t encourage anyone to play the sport. There are other sports.

so much disregard for health and well being within the game and from those that run it. Siobhan Cattigan, Rory Lamont, Steve Thompson…

TrashyPanda · 21/02/2023 09:53

for one wee club publicly speak out against the SRU (and common sense) is just peculiar.

especially in the current climate in Scotland.

once again, women and girls are seen as collateral damage.

shades of Animal Farm. All rugby players are equal but some are more equal than others.

madness.

A couple of years ago I exchanged some views on these types of issues with someone involved with female health issues who supported the erasure of all references to 'female' and 'woman'.

Her defense for that position was that it would have been nice to have more time to celebrate the achievement of full equality between men and women, but the plight of nonbinary and trans people is so bad and they suffer so much that erasing the female sex from the language is now necessary.

My guess is that this may be a common reason for the #bekind people. If they are young they may be still reaping the good harvest planted by the second wavers and have not yet entered the labour force or had children to see where sexism is still deeply embedded, even in the Western world. And it is far worse elsewhere.

Rugby always talks about inclusion for all although it's not always actually true. It does pride itself on accepting all shapes and sizes, finding outlets for troubled kids, being a family etc. I think that is such a core value in rugby that it's being mistakenly applied here. I think there's a difference between allowing something potentially dangerous and telling trans people they can't play. Trans people can play in their biological sex categories and any mixed touch rugby teams. There should still be a place for them without forcing something dangerous on the women's game.

RoseslnTheHospital · 21/02/2023 17:37

Perhaps they should encourage their male teams to be inclusive of anyone born male but presenting differently to the norm. Problem solved.

Of course you couldn't possibly expect the men to have to do that though!

crosstalk · 21/02/2023 17:44

Watch out for the "but there are some big women playing rugby out there" trope. Make sure you have the answer.

This was my first thought, too; however, I can't find anything online, to support it. Glasgow raptors are whingeing about it on Twatter, as well.

I don't think Musselburgh have even got a women or girls team so they can FRO. Their website certainly doesn't shout inclusivity.

As for the Thebans they waffle on about everyone being accepted and yet when you look at 'About Us' it seems they only want men:

^From doctors, nurses, bar staff and events managers through to architects, security personnel and financiers, our team members come from all walks of life. Made up of straight, gay and bisexual men, we operate a prejudice free policy with the ultimate aim of allowing everyone to enjoy competitive rugby.^
