Spain passes trans law allowing gender self-determination from 16

Until now, adults in Spain could only request the change with a medical report attesting to gender dysphoria, a psychiatric condition of unease with life, and proof of hormone treatment for two years. Minors also needed judicial authorisation.

The new law drops all such requirements, with those aged 14 and 15 allowed to apply if their parents or legal guardians agree, while teens aged 12 and 13 will also require a judge's permission.

This is such bad news for children and young people. How can the evidence given by feminists have been so completely ignored? The world has definitely gone mad under the influence of those that believe you can change sex, Horrified tha5 this has happened.

  1. When I think of what a complete chump I was at that age, I'm so grateful I couldn't make any lasting decisions and I fear for the kids being entrusted with them.

Even without the "macho" culture in Spain, it's clear this isn't going to be a good thing for women in any way, shape or form. If I was a teenage girl in a country of so many sex-pests and domestic abusers, I would absolutely want to opt out of being female if it was presented as a choice. Tragically, that's biologically impossible but it won't stop girls from trying.

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 16/02/2023 18:16

It also occurs to me that it's being made seemingly easier to opt out of being female to avoid oppression than to fight that oppression and the people pulling the strings. That's the crux of why I understand why young women find it an attractive prospect but because these very laws make it even easier for women to be oppressed, harassed and abused, I will never support self-ID.

At Thursday's session, Spanish lawmakers also passed another law granting paid medical leave to women suffering from severe period pain, becoming the first European country to advance such legislation.

Will that apply to biological women or legal 'women'?

Will they end up with a situation where male 'women' will claim time off work for their fantasy period pain while young women who really suffer but have self-identified as 'men' won't be allowed time off because it only applies to women?

just to say I have posted the wrong link as this story totally fails to mention the opposition of feminists, and only talks about right wing opposition. (Note to self dont read French newspapers!)

But the story does say:

in recent years, several European nations that pioneered transgender legislation have had second thoughts.

Among those who have reimposed restrictions are Sweden and Finland, while in the United Kingdom, parliament last month blocked a Scottish trans rights law similar to Spain's.

Does anyone know what the reimposed restriction in Sweden and Finland are?

The bill has been heavily criticized by the conservative opposition and so-called "gender-critical" feminist activists, like Patricia Bilbao, who say self-ID puts women at risk.

They argue that it could be used by predatory men to gain access to single-sex spaces such as toilets or changing rooms.

"We are here to support the rights of women as they are completely erasing us with these mysogynist laws, with the trans law being approved today. There was no public debate, they have not been listening to us, they have not listened to feminist collectives and they want to sideline us."

Also being reported in the Mail:
"Women with period pain will be given paid 'menstrual leave' in Spain"

I don't think this will be good for women. Transwomen could abuse this and ruin employment prospects for women.

Just what the hell are we doing to our young girls? Well, not ‘us’ but society or maybe tech bro’s with questionable attitudes to women dominating cyberspace that is encouraging/facilitating rampant misogyny and toxic masculinity. No wonder young girls in the 1000’s don’t want to be girls anymore.

CDC report finds:

in nearly every measure, girls are faring dramatically worse than boys. Girls are experiencing higher rates of depression and hopelessness: a staggering 57% of girls report depression symptoms, compared with 29% of boys. Girls are more likely to drink alcohol and use opioids, along with other recreational drugs. And girls are more than twice as likely to report having seriously considered ending their lives: 30% of girls report serious suicidal ideation, compared with 14% of boys. For girls, the rate of suicidal thoughts has ballooned by 60% over the past decade.

Most disturbingly, girls are reporting an often dramatic increase in the rate of violence they are experiencing. “When we’re looking at experiences of violence, girls are experiencing almost every type of violence more than boys,” Dr Ethier told the New York Times. This includes kinds of threats and bullying that need not be gender-specific. But the teen girls surveyed also report being targeted for sexual violence at an alarmingly increased rate. Eighteen per cent said that they had experienced sexual violence within the past year, up by 20% since 2017. And 14% of teen girls reported having been raped – a figure that has increased by a horrifying 27% since the survey was last conducted in 2019.

Spain is a strongly Catholic country imv so I can’t see people falling over themselves to change sex. Traditional values and habits will be dominant so I don’t think there will be a huge number of trans people.

But just think about what sort of people will take advantage of this law.

I'd expect a lot of prison-onset gender dysphoria at the very least, unless they put a clause in there that prisoners can't transition, or that prisons are segregated according to sex, not self-identified gender.

JanieAllen · 16/02/2023 20:32

they will its exactly kind of country where transing the gay away will be rife

I asked up thread if anyone knows what the more restrictive practices are in Sweden re transing young people.

There is some info in this article:

Sweden, known as a pioneer in LGBTQ rights, started restricting gender-affirming hormone therapy for minors - allowing it only in very rare cases - a year ago.

"We had a protocol in place which was designed for very rare and extreme cases and suddenly the demand exploded so we continued to use that protocol,” said Mikael Landen, a psychiatrist specialising in gender dysphoria who contributed to the scientific study on which Sweden’s health authority based its decision.

“Maybe we shouldn’t have done that. But I wouldn’t be the one criticising the clinicians for doing that because it was difficult, they wanted to help these patients,"

Sweden, like many other western countries, has in recent years seen a sharp rise in diagnoses of gender dysphoria.

According to the Swedish health authority, the trend is particularly visible among 13- to 17-year-olds assigned female at birth, with an increase of 1,500 per cent between 2008 and 2018.

Why are these almost identical laws (self id and conversion therapy) being passed across the West at the same time? And why the sudden hurry? It’s like it’s orchestrated.
