National Museum of Scotland - people who menstruate

The National Museum of Scotland have acquired materials relating to periods through the ages - interesting: blog.nms.ac.uk/2023/02/13/period-products-for-a-21st-century-scotland/

But in an article that talks about the social stigma of periods, it's interesting how a very new social stigma is evident - using the word 'woman'. Yes we do get a desultory mention towards the end, but in the main it's that dehumanising 'people who menstruate ' again, or sometimes just 'people'.

Interesting too how the article mentions provision of period products in schools, so that girls don't have to miss school - never mind the fact that if there are mixed sex toilets in schools, period products are not going to stop girls missing school.

@Holdmypint

But in an article that talks about the social stigma of periods, it's interesting how a very new social stigma is evident - using the word 'woman'.

It is sneakier than that: It is a redefinition of that word into a floating feminine soul feelings which anyone may have. So 'woman' is no longer anything to do with being exposed to sexism, misogyny, sex discrimination etc., or anything to do with possessing a female body and the experiences that come with it and how it affects us, but equally easily achieved by wearing makeup, a dress, high heels, and possibly liking feeling submissive, emotional, nurturing, and passive (all parts of the definition of 'feminine').

This is an enormously large change which has been imposed on all of us without any public consultation, and its consequences for feminist activism and women's rights are equally enormous. And bad.

But they are being inclusive toward the 0.2% or whatever of people who refuse to be seen as women even though they are female adults.

LoobiJee · 13/02/2023 18:07

It’s interesting how comfortable these national institutions are with using dehumanising language in relation to women.

WeepyWillow · 13/02/2023 18:31

An exhibtion on social history of periods would be interesting. The whole post (and exhibitionl) is a promo for one tampon and pads mmanufacturer. Plus chance for publicly funded institution to erase women.

What baffles me is the number of young females spouting this stuff or putting 'preferred pronouns' on their email footer. At work I never encounter men who feel the need to justify themselves like that.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2023 18:35

Anyone can comment on that blog, looks like.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2023 18:37

Ah, it's moderated. Let's see if they allow the word 'woman' to be used in a comment.

HopRockers · 13/02/2023 18:37

TBF they're quite clear why they're using the (ridiculous) language they've chosen.

"While most people probably interpret periods as a woman’s experience, and period products as women’s things, Hey Girls (and other period product manufacturers) want to acknowledge that not all people who menstruate identify as women. Indeed, not all women menstruate! This recent design change for Hey Girls reflects shifting societal attitudes in Scotland (and beyond) around gender identity, an issue which has become more publicly visible and spoken about."

Hilarious that a period product company called "hey girls" doesn't want to say who actually gets periods - I wonder why they chose their name 🙄

Agreed- that was an odd blog post from a Museum - basically an advertorial for a company.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2023 18:40

Indeed, not all women menstruate!

Is this not first order logic error, or something? 'not all women menstruate, therefore nobody who menstruates is a woman'?

viques · 13/02/2023 18:44

While it is true that not all women menstruate it is also true that the number of women who do menstruate is a great deal larger than the number of men who menstruate, or have period pains, or get pmt……….

AlecTrevelyan006 · 13/02/2023 18:46

Should change their name to Hey People

MrsOvertonsWindow · 13/02/2023 18:53

The wonderful thing is that despite all their earnest pronouncements, their sad bleatings, their inadequate grasp of facts - only women gestate and birth babies. Now, in the past and in the future.

Nature's such a bastard for showing up delusionists for what they are.

StrikeItMucky · 13/02/2023 19:18

Oh, what a load of old shit. I can't believe I continued to read the whole of that.

JanieAllen · 13/02/2023 19:20

AAAAARFGGH!!!!!!

headache · 13/02/2023 19:27

Just a tampon/pad advert.

The irony though talking about “people who menstruate” from a company called “Hey girls”!

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 13/02/2023 19:30

Hey girls? How long till they change the name to Hey menstruators?

Forgotthebins · 13/02/2023 19:40

Yes the company should follow through with the name change to “hey people”, otherwise they are being very hypocritical.

nepeta · 13/02/2023 19:41

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 13/02/2023 19:30

Hey girls? How long till they change the name to Hey menstruators?

Should happen soon as we are being told that this is the direction of the future. We are going to have menstruators, but not ejaculators, we are going to have gestating parents for mothers who give birth, but not impregnating parents for the fathers who participated in the conception of that child. We are going to have individuals with a cervix for cervical smear information, but men for prostate cancer information.

The new sexism is the same as the old sexism except now sexism is being pushed by the progressive left, too.

ArabellaScott · 13/02/2023 20:13

'girls' is okay because it's infantilising.

'Women' is not because women turn out to be horrible nasty bastards with bad tempers and long memories.

Nellodee · 14/02/2023 08:21

Well they’re right about one thing. There certainly have been shifting societal attitudes in Scotland of late. Maybe not in the direction they think, but still…

IcakethereforeIam · 14/02/2023 08:30

Still no comments showing. I wonder how how much 'Hey.....girls...?' paid for that tedious nonsense. It seems no one's reading it, or at least no one who's buying what they're selling.

ArabellaScott · 14/02/2023 09:22

Has anyone tested it with some kind of genderist pish comment yet?

JanieAllen · 14/02/2023 09:25

Just commented ... watch this space

Well done, here's hoping. It appears on the museum's FB page, with lots of supportive comments, and only one detractor...

Here the NMS manages to celebrate women scientists. It's a great thread.

All women menstruate for a big chunk of their lives.
