Stonewall chair quits Conservative Party to support Labour

I see Iain Anderson, Stonewall's chair, has quite the Conservative Party and pledged support for Keir Starmer, over the Tories' "willingness to put vulnerable groups on the front line of a culture war." Not a huge surprise but does rather make my leftie heart sink further, since he will undoubtedly have influence over Labour thinking and policy on Self ID etc.

There's a clip of him with Nick Robinson, being asked about "Isla". He keeps referring to him as "the individual" and "the rapist".

I think it's pretty clear where Stonewall's allegiances now lie. And Labour's.

scratchedbymycat · 13/02/2023 12:00

Oh god! 😢

StephanieSuperpowers · 13/02/2023 12:15

Well, it seems like the left aren't going to be any more supportive of women into the future.

Repeating this from another thread. Anderson and Starmer are two privileged males who (as the Denton's report highlighted) have no doubt made an agreement behind closed doors, avoiding democratic scrutiny.

That's why we're in this mess - privileged white men abandoning safeguarding children and women's rights in favour of the desires of their mates.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/02/2023 12:41

Another rat fleeing the sinking ship.

SinnerBoy · 13/02/2023 12:43

Well, this certainly doesn't bode well for people who would like to vote Labour.

There’s now way I could vote Labour, but I don’t think they care; they’re clearly not even trying to win womens votes.

We’ve gone back 50 years at least.

Another rat fleeing the sinking ship.

Is that how you see it?

He obviously feels that his views on trans issues will find a natural home in the Labour party. I don't think that's a good thing for Labour, all the issues around gender ideology or my ability to vote for a party. It really doesn't reflect badly on the Tory party at this point.

knittingaddict · 13/02/2023 12:49

I do agree that he's a rat though. Just not sure which boat is sinking.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/02/2023 12:41

Another rat fleeing the sinking ship.

That’s not what I would call this.

This is the one (single) thing the Conservatives are right on.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/02/2023 12:52

The Conservatives are the ones who kicked this shitshow off in 2017. That's why Stonewall chair was a Tory until this weekend. And yes, the Tories are a sinking ship.

knittingaddict · 13/02/2023 13:04

And now the Tories are the only ones even a little bit interested in holding it back. Out of the two main parties Labour are the ones massively out of step with the general public on this issue.

AmaryllisNightAndDay · 13/02/2023 13:09

Can Keir Starmer say "thanks but no thanks"? Or "Way to go mate, let's all band together to support vulnerable women and stop all this TWAW self-id culture war nonsense"

(Fantasy)

howmanybicycles · 13/02/2023 13:14

"I see Iain Anderson, Stonewall's chair, has quite the Conservative Party and pledged support for Keir Starmer, over the Tories' "willingness to put vulnerable groups on the front line of a culture war.""

Which actually makes no sense seeing as Iain is protecting men and he and Kier are saying 'fuck women and their pesky rights' - they are the ones putting vulnerable people on the front line of a culture war.

Absolutely nonsense to suggest Isla is not a woman according to their ideology. Isla is as much a woman as any other TW (i.e. in my opinion not a woman but in theirs, as much as woman as anyone with XX chromosomes). You don't get to pick and choose such that only nice men are recognised as women.

TooBigForMyBoots · 13/02/2023 13:15

a little bit interested in holding it back is not enough. They've massively damaged women's rights. They need to fix it before they're voted out. They still have a huge majority in the HoC They need to use it.

Deeds not words.

nauticant · 13/02/2023 13:21

The fundamental enabler of the current shit show is the Gender Recognition Act 2004. Even if the Labour government had to enact some law, they didn't have to enact that particular one.

They tried to make up for the loopholes it created with the Equality Act 2010 but that was botched.

Namecangeonce · 13/02/2023 13:22

All this has happened under the Tories. They lie about anything and everything and would sell their own mothers if they could get away with it. Really don't get so called life long lefties considering voting for them. Spoil your vote yes. Vote reform as they are even more right wing but at least you'd be splitting the RW vote.

nilsmousehammer · 13/02/2023 13:23

They're making it more and more a split voting issue.

Vote Labour and lose your rights, access, equality, privacy, dignity and safety as a women and see other women go down in flames and get raped to bolter the inner self of a multiple rapist?

Or vote Tory.

<Shrug> K.

Tories, open goal over here.

Cross post. Unfortunately as a floating voter I'll tactically vote to keep the least anti-woman, anti-reality insane ones out. Wasted votes don't help protect women's rights.

And there's more chance of getting the Tories at this point to learn some better sense re poverty, NHS and other issues than trying to get Labour et al back from La La Land.

What have we been (pointlessly) saying for years about join Labour and change it from the inside? Never worked. Or we start seriously to set up a women's party meaning actual women.

Namecangeonce · 13/02/2023 13:26

@knittingaddict how do you know what public opinion is ? Most of the women I work with are not the slightest bit interested when I've brought it up and actually are quite sympathetic to trans people.

nilsmousehammer · 13/02/2023 13:28

Are they sympathetic to vulnerable women in showers with rapists? Or women living in life threatening relationships because there are men in the women's refuge? 🤔

Because once you frame it as 'either you gladly fuck over women or you're sympathetic to trans people' really it's kind of obvious it's all gone hideously wrong. It should be perfectly possible to be sympathetic to trans people without the fucking over of women.

If I'm being required to choose, however....?

There have been polls that ask the general public how they feel about transwomen in women's spaces if the TW has a penis. A large majority are against it. Once it is made clear what allowing TW into changing rooms and women's prisons etc means the public are no longer fooled into thinking it's ok.

I'm sure someone will put the poll up for you.

StephanieSuperpowers · 13/02/2023 13:32

Yep, this is the problem. Everyone is sympathetic to people who are struggling in some way, but for some reason, the struggles of women are less interesting and compelling. However, once you see what the choice actually means, I think you have to chose side women and a grip on reality.

knittingaddict · 13/02/2023 13:33

You say people aren't interested. I met my cousin at my mum's funeral in the spring, having not seen her for decades. She's a bit older than me and bought up the subject before I did. Just like my daughter she is a victim of male violence (many women are) and takes a strong view on this. More and more people are starting to care very much.
