Trans athletes research - Brighton

Does anyone know anything about this? The university are apparently conducting research into the effects of hormone therapy on athletic ability in trans athletes.

The person I spoke to about this said that indications were that the data suggests hormone consumption completely negates any advantages that come from being male. I'm thinking, surely not? Participants in the study were doing activities last week, how can the researchers have run all the data already?

Also, I don't know who is funding the research and whether or not they have an agenda one way or another. The trans person who was telling me about it (I am a secret terf because I'm not brave enough to potentially lose my job) was very happy with what they'd been told and it made me question if the research could be biased towards gender ideology/denial of sex.

The researcher works for Mermaids

How does hormone treatment negate the effect of male pubertal advantages in height, strength, muscle development etc?

Right, of course.

I'm sure i have read about other studies that show they still have advantages 3 years after taking hormones

Well, that's what I was wondering. But from what the person was telling me, taking hormones just takes trans women to the level of women in terms of speed, strength, physical power etc

That sounds like bullshit to me

Probablymagrat · 12/02/2023 21:23

That is ridiculous, being 6'3'' with a much longer stride as a result of being male will always be an advantage over a smaller woman with a shorter stride no matter how much estrogen is consumed or lipstick worn.

When I attended the said University, a lecturer once told me the most important aspect to consider when evaluating research is who paid for it and who would benefit from the published results.

midgemadgemodge · 12/02/2023 21:23

Well yes they would
Especially if they know they are being tested

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 12/02/2023 21:25

I think your friend is mixing up research projects.

This is the Brighton researcher.

It’s Loughborough that are doing the hormone study and they are down to one participant 🙊

It's Brighton what do you expect?

onlypans · 12/02/2023 21:25

I'm worried that a university study will publish the conclusion that trans women are not advantaged and this will be really damaging and dangerous to female athletes. Concerned that it'll give media friendly sound bites etc and be legitimised by academic association.

The Loughborough study is a laughing stock:

There’s already research around this and it’s clear that puberty creates substantial physical differences between males and females. Lowering testosterone doesn’t equal things out but of course Brighton Uni will desperately try to show it does.

CampervanKween · 12/02/2023 21:28

It just can't be true. Because they have all the retained benefits of having a male body. Of having gone through a male puberty.

So whatever nonsense they are attempting to cook up, it just can't pass muster as anything serious or scientific.

The person who took part was definitely in Brighton and said the focus was on medicated trans people involved in sport, but not elite sport, just normal local level stuff.

Ah the usual completely objective and not in anyway confirmation bias research from mermaids 🙄

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 12/02/2023 21:29

This the Brighton one, it’s Queer Theory, social science, not proper science:

Ah it seems the Brighton study is about barriers to engagement.

Wow, ok. That's really not how it was described to me! Thanks for the info.

I haven't observed any barriers to trans women participating in a lot of sports at local level, it seems very accepted even though I can't quite believe everyone involved is really ok with it, rather they're "being kind" or whatever

There is a proper sports scientist who works at the Eastbourne campus, but he collaborates with the Loughborough researcher (Joanna Harper, who is trans):

His main interest is genomics and blood doping:

Could be this dude:

That protocol includes things like grip strength - no way will that end up equalised!
