Pay equity in football - supporting Canadian women

I would love for this story to gain more attention. $5m/year funding to the Canadian women’s team (who only won an Olympic Gold Medal, after all), Vs $11m for men. I’m pretty sure the women’s team has a stronger following. It beggars belief that these levels of blatant, quantifiable discrimination still exist. Ugh!

Last i heard, the women didn't actually have a strong following and if they did it was mostly online? I thought the income of the different games was vastly different or am I thinking of rugby?

Dh and I were discussing this, we were wondering where the money was coming from? Same or different revenue streams?

another well written cbc piece but no further info on the funding.

Sadly they had to stop their strike. Soccer Canada threatened them with legal action :(

Canada's men's team qualified for the World Cup, which is a huge money spinner but many of their players are at clubs in Europe and earning such huge salaries that the pay from the national team is drop in the ocean. Not sure about Canada but England’s male players donate all their appearance fees to the England Footballers Foundation charity.

Its not a man vs woman pay thing

It's a how much revenue they being in and skill level

Womans football players are only good compared to other womans football players.

It's been proven 15yr old boys will beat a woman national team

Bit of a chicken and egg situation on revenue. The Canadian women’s team are Olympic medalists 3 times over. The men’s team only qualified THIS YEAR for the World Cup. In Canada, the women’s team actually really does have a decent following, although soccer overall is less of a revenue generator than hockey (Obvs). The problem is people can’t spend money on the women’s team if there’s no merchandise and if their games are poorly advertised. You’ve got to spend to earn ;-)

By that logic, there should be no women’s sports of any sort, as bigger, stronger, faster men will nearly always outperform?

I’m more than happy to watch women compete against women. It doesn’t really matter to me in that context if men (or boys…?) would perform better. The game is still great to watch.

As far as I know the CSA says the two groups are paid at the same level, but the pay structure is different. Which I think reflects differences in the way the players are scheduled.

That being said, they haven't been especially forthcoming about the details.

Professional athletes though are really paid as an entertainers. So it's always going to reflect revenues. If people think the women should be paid more, the most straightforward way to achieve that is to go to the games.
