Company boycotts

With ocado I told them why and cancelled everything in 2018. With Sainsbury's I did but still "need" to use them a couple of times a year for things that only they and ocado stock, so I swallow my principles and only order what I can't get anywhere else. I wasn't as cross with them, tbf GrinBlush
I've not bought Oatly or innocent smoothies for a couple of years but didn't t them why. There are more, I expect (I hold grudges). Oh, wagamama too.
So, my DH was chatting to me about a fairly major purchasing decision he was making at work today, and the customer service rep had they/them pronouns in their email signature, so he was put off. It's probably not appropriate for him to say why he's not buying to the supplier, given the nature of his role and employer, but it got me thinking about how much money boycotts have cost companies and their go-woke-go-broke strategies.
We have decent purchasing power as a cohort (reality-based feminists and allies) so do you think boycotting will make a dent/difference? And do you tell companies why you're not using them?

Oh and Oxfam!

Boiledbeetle · 08/06/2023 00:49

I'm sure they will be many more by the end of June!

Flora, Lush, Bodyform (never used Always in the first place), Amnesty.

What did bodyform do?

What did bodyform do?

Can't think of the top of my head, I did briefly think of the photo of all the women bleeding, but on checking that's Luteal, a company selling products to promote menstrual health and symptom relief, who were responsible for this delight

I boycott, but I’m not into consumerism to begin with, so not sure I’m making a big impact.
Is there an updated list of companies somewhere?

I really want a National Trust membership but am holding out for now…

A few years ago I saw a 'hack' that it can be cheaper to buy a foreign version of the NT that has a reciprocal agreement with the NT.

The US version, Royal Oak, deliver to the UK. Just reading and you can join it at NT property, so you could join and make a point of why you are not joining the NT.

Membership - The Royal Oak Foundation

If your interests include art, architecture, gardens, landscapes, interior design, heritage and cultural activities, then Royal Oak membership is for you.

I boycott Rapha as they continue to support Emily Bridges. I don't think it harms their sales at all unfortunately as DP is aware but still buys from them as loves everything they do 😡

TodayInahurry · 08/06/2023 08:26

Oxfam for their latest trans nastyness although already avoided due to their foreign aid workers abusing woman and children

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 08:28

@Teamsaction I do think every single cent makes a difference. Even just to empower yourself. I felt very powerful boycotting Nike & also Innocent smoothies. It feels good to have a choice. It feels good to not spend your money supporting a company who no longer aligns with your values & by taking your hard earned money elsewhere.

Thank you, I’ll look into it!

Is there any chance we have a pinned thread of anti-women companies? I’m happy to contribute with research but am crap at logging to MN and keeping a thread up, so am not a good OP.

I used to love Lush. Told myself I'd just learn to make my own products.

I went to university in Liverpool, where the city-wide boycott of The Sun must rate as the UK's most effective consumer boycott.

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 09:16

@Beowulfa what did Lush do?

That photo is awful, just so unnecessarily offensive.
I was just wondering about Bodyform because I had thought they were very good in staying focused on women without getting drawn in to the culture wars.
I needed to buy pads this week in Tesco. They only had Always, own brand and body form. I picked Bodyform specifically as I try not to buy 'woke' brands who insult their core consumers. I would be disappointed if Bodyform also join the list.

@Beowulfa what did Lush do?

Allowed girls to collect breast binders ordered online without their parents' knowledge.

Moonandstarz · 08/06/2023 15:42

@Beowulfa it's so concerning the way parents are being cut out & cut off by educators & companies.
