Blue Jean: lesbian film — but the Guardian review doesn't mention the L word

This is a shout out to all the women involved in the film Blue Jean, which is about a lesbian teacher during the Section 28 years. It shows a scenario that some of us here will have experienced and I take my hat off to the women (it is almost entirely the work of women — writer, director, most of the producers) who managed to get it made in a relentlessly woke arts scene where being GC gets you cancelled.

The Telegraph ('this brave British debut is surely a slam-dunk masterpiece') says It's so rare in British cinema to see the "L" in "LGBTQ+" up there in such bold type. But Peter Bradshaw in the Guardian is negative from the get-go and manages to write his whole piece without using the word lesbian once. The Guardian can't cope with lesbians, apparently. We are 'gay women.' Well, at least he used the word 'women'.

Talk about damned with faint praise; you get the feeling the critic can hardly type for having to hold his nose. Inadequate drama, inferior sex, unmentionable sexuality - poor bloke doesn't know what to patronise first..

What a prick!

I saw Rosy McEwan at the National Theatre last month, she was excellent.

Peter Bradshaw always seemed to me to have pursed lips whenever women's stories are told.

Why are you so upset about a film review? It's one man's opinion.... It's also funny how you purposely chose an old review from Bradshaw. There's another review published in Feb 2023 by Wendy Ide in the Guardian where she's given it a glowing 5 out of 5.... And the L word is mentioned. I swear we need to start implementing IQ tests before letting anyone online

The article you mention was published TWO DAYS AFTER this thread.

What do you want OP to do? Build a time machine? Buy a crystal ball?

If you can’t read dates maybe you should follow your own advice and have YOUR IQ tested before posting?

(Also, it’s an Observer article, not a Guardian article, the two papers share a website)

Well I guess we should just be thankful he didn't say queer, I'm always waiting for that word to jump out and punch me in the stomach.

Thank you for sticking up for my IQ, Shirewife of Nige!

The Observer is a separate newspaper, as far as I'm aware, and it's always been much more pro-women and questioning of gender ideology than the Guardian which, from Katherine Viner down, is totally captured.

Always check your dates, Emmy. Otherwise you tend to look a bit of an arse.

Why are you so upset about a MN thread? It's only an opinion. It's also funny how you purposely chose an old thread from last month.

Are you always a complete hypocrite?
