It may be of interest on this board that Milli Hill (a writer subject to huge criticism in the birthing world and forced out of her own Positive Birth Movement due to stating that only women give birth....who would have thought?!) has a new version of her book out, including a chapter about gender identity politics.

In a similar way to Nicola Sturgeon's recent comments attempting to falsely-team all those who speak up for women's rights with those who are racist and homophobic, Milli Hill was also a victim to multi-faceted aspersions around transphobia, exclusion and racism. I think class might have been thrown in there too, for good measure!

All the best, Milli, if you are reading.

She also wrote a great poem about affirmation. Shame on Burberry, promoting body mutilation.

We got a copy of this in the library I work in today. Excellent stuff especially as it's the only birth book we have so hopefully will be borrowed a lot.

Oh my word, Milli Hill’s tweets are amazing.
More power to her.

That is a powerful poem

Very powerful poem.

Burberry are a fucking disgrace.

Milli Hill’s situation reminds me a lot of Rosie Kay and the dance company.

A thread of professional jealousy runs through both situations. A woman uses her skills, talents and intellect to create something, she stands tall and prominent in her professional field and then others are delighted to cut her down as soon as a perceived flaw is identified. Both women were vilified by those in their own sphere.

That's amazing. There is such a clear trajectory

I won’t be giving birth ever again but am tempted to buy her book. I’d like to read what she says anyway.

Creepybookworm · 29/01/2023 20:32

It's well worth a read. It's very interesting. I would advise it for a first time mother but for anyone who has had a baby its worthwhile. It's saying something no one else is publicly at the moment in the birth world , or at least no one with such a voice as hers.

The birth worker world is a very competitive and political one. It's all empowerment and kindness on the public side and back biting and judgement on the other. You have to be a brave soul to come out swinging on the gender issue.

Sounds brilliant, thanks for sharing.

That’s interesting. Thank you. I’ve never heard the term “birth worker”: is this American?

Shame to hear that this world has become embroiled in gender ideology. The aim within the profession is surely to keep mothers and babies as safe and as well as possible during labour and birth.

Creepybookworm · 30/01/2023 15:10

May well be American. Refers to all the people who work in the world of birth as well as midwife's such as doulas, hypnobirthing instructors, people who run antenatal classes etc. Then there are people who write the books and run the websites and the 'influencers'. I doubt any want women and babies to be unsafe but there is money to be made by discrediting competition.
