Scottish Rugby stops males from playing contact rugby against women.

"Our gender participation policy recognises the need to balance considerations of safety and fairness with our underlying desire to be as inclusive as possible.

"At this moment in time, Scottish Rugby has opted to make a decision which puts safety first, based on the current research."

A move in the right direction, and some clear language The SRU has said "contact rugby for players in the women's category is limited to those whose sex was recorded as female at birth".

what a time to be alive. It is a great thing that a rugby organisation says men shouldn't play against women - like who thinks this is ok??? While at the same time a "woman" with an intact penis was convicted of raping 2 women and the crime will be recorded as a crime committed by a woman.

Rugby is having a massive internal battle to make the sport as safe as possible without fundamentally changing the game. This change (and the English one) aren't about standing up for women's right to play sport, and I don't think they're particularly concerned about women's safety. They're just scared of yet more stories of how they've failed to protect participants from serious and predictable harm, and the damage the headlines would do to the bit they care about - the men's game.

There was a really upsetting article in the times (I think) a couple of months ago about a women's international and the SRU's complete failure to recognise the damage caused by concussion, their failure to even have her privately medically assessed (which obvs the men's internationals wouldn't even have to ask for), and the way her memory was treated after she died. They don't give a stuff about women, or their safety.

Better than nothing though, I suppose. The more sports that come out and say no, the easier it is for others to do the same.

The player I'm talking about was called Siobhan Cattigan. She was 26 when she died.
