Telegraph: Letting pupils 'socially transition' harms well-being, teachers told

Also a note on Cass, final report coming "later this year":

"Teachers are to be warned against “socially transitioning” children who question their gender, The Telegraph has learned.
Allowing pupils to change their names and pronouns to match their preferred gender could have a major impact on their psychological wellbeing, schools will be told in new guidance.
There has been growing concern about teachers allowing children to embrace a new gender identity at school, in some cases without the knowledge of their parents.
The official advice, due to be published by the Department for Education (DfE) in the coming months, comes amid a growing backlashh_ against the Government’s plans to ban transgender conversion therapy."
And

The Telegraph has been told by three senior sources familiar with DfE’s upcoming transgender guidance that it will reflect the interim findings of the Cass revieww_ on youngsters experiencing “gender-related distress”.
It notes that allowing children to “socially transition” to their preferred gender is “not a neutral act” and can have “significant” impact on their “psychological functioning”.
New guidance later this year
The Cass review was commissioned by the NHS to make recommendations on the services provided to children and young people exploring their gender identity. It is expected to publish its final report later this year."

And

"Officials at the DfE said they understood this was an issue parents were “deeply concerned” about and would be consulting widely on the draft guidance before publishing a final version.
On Wednesday Tory MPs urged ministers to ensure that the guidance provides schools with greater clarity on how to treat transgender children.
Damian Green, a former deputy prime minister and chairman of the one nation caucus of MPs, said: “I think that clearly parents need to be involved at every stage of anything sensitive like this. I hope that when the new guidance is published it makes clear that children obviously need to be treated sympathetically but parents need to be involved in any decisions.”
Mr Green, a critic of plans to extend the conversion therapy ban to trans people, said he would wait until the draft Bill was published to see whether it allayed his concerns.
“The majority of Conservative MPs, and indeed the majority of the country will not accept an ideology that says children can change their gender at their own decision before they are adults,” he added.
Miriam Cates, a member of the education select committee, said schools which were allowing children to socially transition without informing their parentss_ was an “enormous safeguarding failure”.
She added that the issue of transgender children was a “minefield” for schools and the guidance had to be clear that social transitioning should not take place without consulting medical practitioners.
“It is completely outside teachers’ remit and training to be making these kinds of decisions,” she said. “Feeling you have been born in the wrong body should give you a safeguarding profile.”
Ms Cates urged ministers to delay publication of their Bill on conversion therapy until after the Cass review has made its final report.
“I am of course against harmful gay conversion practices but I have concerns about children with gender distress,” she said.
“There are so many unanswered questions about the huge explosion of children who are identifying as trans.
“Even if the Bill is very tightly drafted, the concern is it would have a chilling effect on parents, teachers and medical professionals - and that is not in young people’s interests.”
A DfE spokesman said that officials are “working towards providing guidance to support schools in relation to these issues, and we plan to consult on a draft before final publication this year”."

looks encouraging but given we have Gillian Keegan as Education Minister, would need to see what the school guidance is.
