Missouri House adopts new dress code for women requiring covering of arms

The Missouri House of Representatives proposed a bill Wednesday that would restrict women’s dress code in the state’s House, but would not tighten the dress code for men, eventually passing a version of the bill calling for women to cover their arms.

(Its too late at night to think straight, but cant believe this is real. Surely they have bigger issues to be addressing.)

What a bizarre thing to spend time debating and discussing. And the sexism is just ridiculous. Women's arms are not disrespectful, neither are men's arms either for that matter!

Were they asked to explain exactly the problem with women's arms Apologies, not sure if women's arms needs a trigger warning. Is it like flashing a tit or waving a cock about? Are women's arms included in some sort of obscenity laws in Missouri?

That headline sounds misleading. The article text says that previously women had the choice of wearing a sweater or suit jacket, both of which would have covered their arms. Now it’s just a jacket.

Plus, why the double standard when men have to wear full suits and ties?

Bigger than policing women? You sweet summer child.

From that brief article, it sounds like the amendment didn't mention arms at all. Sounds like they're just bringing women's attire into line with the men's. Everyone wears a jacket now.

What it sounds like to me, is the women who have previously enjoyed double standards (a sort of reverse sexism where the men have had a stricter dress code than the women), don't like losing them. So it gets positioned as a rule forcing women to cover their arms.

Whereas really it's a rule to wear jackets, same as the men have got.

strumpert · 15/01/2023 08:10

Do the men have to cover their arms?

Anactor · 15/01/2023 08:21

It’s a non-story, they were just bringing the women’s dress code in line with the men’s. They didn’t review the men’s dress code because it already says ‘coat and tie’.

Sound like a case of When you are used to privilege, equality feels like oppression.

Or not ?

I thought all US citizens had the right to bare arms.

Interesting to see responses, and normally yes I pick up on what would appear to be women being treated differently to men.

But in this instance I was thinking surely in this day and age no one (apart from Buckingham Palace) thinks it it necessary to be wearing something as out of date and indicative of one culture as a jacket (and tie).

What century are these people living in, and of course the presumption that something that is specifically redolent of white middle class europan culture as being one everyone should aspire to.

Should a woman who normally wears a sari have to put a western jacket over the top?

And has no one heard why Nelson Mandela never wore a tie?

But then I suppose it is probably a white christian republican state.

Next thing you know that will be saying women should wear a hat and gloves.

Living in the 21st century but ruled by 19th century values.
