Effective Altruism and Labour for the Long-Term Connection?

If any of us are wondering why Labour seems indifferent to women's rights, it's possible that the Labour for the Long-Term (LLT) plans see us an necessary collateral damage.

Effective Altruism is associated with Sam Bankman-Fried (FTX crash). It's also providing money for researchers for Labour MPs.

Some seasonal reading. No mention of women's rights but when I see the sponsored MPs it gave me pause for thought.

LLT popped up on the MPs’ register of interests soon after, donating a £30,000-a-year ‘policy adviser’ to health secretary Wes Streeting. On its website, it boasts of having support from other shadow ministers, too, such as Anneliese Dodds, Alex Sobel and Fleur Anderson.

It has recently advertised for a ‘policy and operations manager’ worth up to £50,000 a year, suggesting a funding pot larger than most of Labour’s affiliated socialist societies. And it is understood that the group hopes to continue growing its roster of advisers and staffers for MPs and other decision makers across the spectrum of the Labour Party.

In the New Yorker piece, I came across Schelling Fences which I'd not seen before.

Those were interesting to read, thanks. Funny how various movements seemingly on the left use the same old-boys'-network tactics with a handful of powerful men and lots of money, all done behind the curtain. I don't think feminist organisations have worked that way, though perhaps I am simply to naive.

The motte-and-bailey device is also good to know for understanding the weird things Judith Butler writes and why some part of my brain always sends me alarm signals about her being wrong while the ordinary reading center struggles.

It's very seductive, basically having altruism given as a cover for anything and everything that you do so that your every dubious action has a built-in explanation.

What is this fabulous new world for which it will be worth creating and assigning more vulnerabilities to an already vulnerable half of the population? And for which it's worth compelling speech and thought?

There will be billions up for grabs for certain progressive causes from Silicon Valley that might have a destabilising effect.
