Offensive alert for A Christmassy Ted

Just watching the Father Ted Xmas special on More4 for the umpteenth time - fresh as ever, but it was preceded by a warning that some viewers might find it offensive. I've been racking my brains (no Supremes, no racist Ted) but coming up with nothing. Can't be the Fr Todd Unctuous scene. Could it be the Ireland's largest lingerie store section? Men with an inordinate interest in women's underwear are now a sacred caste rather than a source of humour?

Good god.

I googled, btw, and found this delightful news story:

bloomtoperish · 24/12/2022 21:22

Glinner's name in the credits?

Var57 · 24/12/2022 21:23

Drink Feck Arse?

Saucery · 24/12/2022 21:23

We watched that this evening too, but I didn’t register the warning. I do tend to skip over them though (Peep Show has them too and I just think well, duh).
Could it be the children copying Father Jack in the crèche?

BaronMunchausen · 24/12/2022 21:43

I'll have to watch it (again!) on All 4, the warning may be different when it's broadcast on More 4 which is when I heard it. Previously I've only logged alerts before the talent contest and racist Ted episodes (pretty much every episode has feck and arse - and Glinner in the credits!). I'm curious. I do suspect humour derived from male interest in lingerie may now be "offensive" - even though part of the joke is that the men are priests.

I've watched it but didn't notice anything any more offensive than usual. Father Ted was never known as a programme for the easily offended 😉

fibeee · 24/12/2022 22:02

Could it be Dougal dressed as a matador?

Notanotherone6 · 24/12/2022 22:27

Hahaha. I mean, I'd just be grateful that they've not banned it entirely.

susieblake · 24/12/2022 22:33

I'm a continuity announcer (hence the name change) and you would not believe the stuff we have to give warnings for...!

Carry on films are especially problematic...

It will be some sensitivity just to cover their arses. Top episode. It doesn't feel like Christmas till I've watched it

Feministwoman · 25/12/2022 00:36

Glinner wrote it. Bound to be this. Sadly.

InfluenzalA · 25/12/2022 07:10

Just remember, anything who thought Jordan Gray needed a pre warning was being ridiculous and should have known what was coming.

But viewers of Fr Ted need a warning...ok!

RambamThankyouMam · 25/12/2022 07:43

It'll be Glinner's name in the credits. If not forewarned, trans and non-binary folx identities will be erased if they see it, and they will literally die. It's a rum do.

Saucery · 25/12/2022 07:48

Had a thought that it could be the teenage boys’ disablist language and face pulling on the Priest Chat Line. That always makes me wince, even though it’s in character for them pissing about.

PriamFarrl · 25/12/2022 08:17

I watched it on BritBox. No warning there.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 25/12/2022 10:41

Not that I really care about offence warnings but it's odd that they don't do them for everyday grinding sexism and misogyny isn't it?

Cheekymaw · 25/12/2022 10:49

We watched it as well!🤣It's bloody hilarious and never gets old and then we watched the one with Bishop Brennon and the film "Down With That Sort of Thing!" Should have a warning for peri/menopausal women with bladder issues as I laughed so bloody hard ! 🤣(Tmi!) Bloody needed a good laugh as family worries and fair pissed off about Scotland! Thanks again @Glinner!

Ohyoudodoyou · 25/12/2022 11:01

The carry on film warnings, somewhere I imagine there is one person watching one of those films and waiting and watching and waiting until that one archaic joke then leaping to tweet about offended they are thus starting a 'Cancel Sid James' campaign. This will then snowball until he becomes the biggest -ist and -phone known to man. The someone will point out he's been dead for nearly 5 decades.
So I suggest - watch another channel.

A Christmassy Ted was on E4 Extra on Friday night, and yep, the same warnings that some viewers might find it offensive. Seriously? How the fuck have we got here?

My guess is that literally NO ONE is offended by it, but someone decided that they should be offended on someone else's behalf so that was that.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/12/2023 10:32

I love that episode but the one with the hairy babies is my favourite.

irishmurdoch · 10/12/2023 10:42

I'm offended by the suggestion that it's offensive

That one is brilliant. I agree.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 10/12/2023 10:57

It's the bit at the end where Dugald sits up in bed and realises that the women were in the buff.

‘Mocking’ the Catholic Church/Irish? (if you didn’t know who it was written by!)

No one is actually offended by Father Ted though, it’s thoroughly delightful throughout.
