A moving article from Wings Over Scotland, discussing why women and girls who need personal care often prefer single sex care, and how the GRR bill is likely to impact on that.

From an article linked in the original piece: (Content warning, rape, abuse)

'The problem of men using care careers in order to access and rape vulnerable women is so widespread that the Westminster government recognises it specifically in sexual offences legislation.'

...

'Government statistics show that males commit 98 per cent of all sexual offences. Government figures for the three years ending March 2018 suggest “3.7 per cent of disabled adults aged 16 to 59 years experienced any sexual assault (including attempts), compared with 1.9 per cent of non-disabled adults.'

Same article. Same content warning:

'The rape and sexual abuse of vulnerable patients receiving care is rife. Between March and May 2018 hundreds of elderly and vulnerable social care residents have allegedly been sexually assaulted in just three months, a shock report from the care regulator revealed.
According to the Care Quality Commission (CQC), there were 899 sexual incidents reported by social care homes between March and May 2018. Almost half were categorised as sexual assault.'

That coruscating article is Dr Em, in the Morning Star. It's a very hard read, but this is something that needs to be looked at and dealt with.

I want to add something about the Sexual Offences Act; Section 42 clarifies it includes volunteers not just paid carers; but it only applies to those who abuse women who have a mental disorder.
I think it needs to be expanded to protect women who have a physical disability or age related impairment.

Oh, wow. Yes, thank you Inebriati. It absolutely should.

Quite the juxtaposition reading this thread after just watching the video just posted on another thread quoting all the politicians stressing the need to protect 'the most vulnerable, marginalised group in society'

DameMaud · 16/12/2022 16:26

I think I referred to it to a friend the other day as 'sexy social justice'.
Disability, prisons, domestic violence are just too hard for people to look at.

ArabellaScott · 16/12/2022 16:55

Yes. Some protected characteristics are just not as interesting.

Imagine being stripped naked in front or even by, a stranger who is a male, How does that feel?
It can be hard even with a strange woman.
Men enjoy seeing naked women.......they even pay to see it. Just cos they do "care work" doesn't mean they don't or won't get off on it.😡
