Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

BBC misgendering in article about "Staying warm: What does an unheated room do to your body?"

howmanybicycles · 20/11/2022 16:09

The article says that the body works hard to keep the core at 37C and describes a number of ways our bodies do this. It's written from the perspective of a male bodied person Then it says that "this would happen even more quickly if I were a different gender".

But what is their evidence that if a person had the same body but a different gender identity, this would happen more quickly? Or that it would not happen quicker for me because despite having a female body, like most adult human females, I don't identify as a woman.

Should we be calling out the BBC on their inconsistent use of the term gender? Would that help them see the damage they do when they use it in ways which woman find offensive?

No, it's evidence of how we're all expected to enable batshit women-harming politics.

Because as you know: Gender means sex when it suits the TQ+ political lobby while also having other connotations and meanings and being other things entirely which have never yet been pinned down when it suits the TQ+ lobby .

And fuck that for a game of soldiers. Not enabling it. Not looking nicely the other way and playing along. The batshit is going to get called out, loudly and repeatedly, until it stops.

Yep. Fuck that. And not allowing bbc to use it differently in ways that serve the purposes of the MRAs is part of that

There’s actually a Guardian article today on staying warm that (surprisingly?) goes into detail about physiological differences between men and women.
From their Science section.
Cold comfort: the science of staying warm in the energy crisis

Right. While they're playing that game we have to fight to push back every time gender is used when they mean sex. The equivocation has to be called out.

Which in practice means almost always using "sex", as "gender" signifies nothing material. Only exceptions would be "gender studies" type stuff. There's no reason the word "gender" should ever occur in a science column, any more than "star sign" should.

The journalist could have easily omitted the offending sentence anyway. It reads as though he was intending to get us riled up by writing it.

I wonder if he has ever seen a list of the nonsense genders people are concocting now - how different would he feel if he were agender, xenogender etc etc? He wouldn't, because he'd still have the same male physiology.

He means sex and he should say sex.

That said, it was an interesting article but I'm still wondering about air temperature and the effects thereof, even if I am wearing lots of layers and eat more carbs.

RIP Magdalen 💚💟💜

What Kind Of Fools Do Transgender UK and Stonewall Take Us For?

According to James, Alex the bearded lesbian would experience the cold differently, assuming James identifies as "man gender" of course.

Christ, what a twat.

"If all you ever see is trans women who completely pass and are completely convincing as natal females, then those of us who just don't have that kind of luck won't have the confidence to come out."

Are there ANY transwomen who completely pass and are convincing? Vanishingly small number. The delusion is strong.

Also: ""I'm widening the bandwidth of how to be a woman." By having a penis and a beard and XY chromosomes?

I'm widening the bandwidth of how to be a woman." By having a penis and a beard and XY chromosomes?

Does anyone else automatically follow this statement with "oh fuck off you wanker" in their head? 😂

Yep. The meaning of words is constantly switched in order to deceive.

They also rely on the 'original' meaning being used 99 percent of the time, otherwise communication would totally fail across the board.

See accusations of homophobia being reliant on the true definition, that they simultaneously claim doesn't exist.

Forfrigz · 21/11/2022 07:43

I think they wanted to use the word 'sex' which is always more accurate but there's been a push against its use as it has gender critical connotations. What a time to be alive 😅

Boiledbeetle · 24/11/2022 16:14

Just recieve the, and checked the article which does now reference sex target than gender

Dear Boiled

Thank you for writing in with your feedback about the BBC News story “Staying warm: What does an unheated room do to your body?” (www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-63602501).

This first-person piece explains how human bodies react to cold temperatures, and we acknowledge your concerns about our writer referring to women as a “different gender” to him.

When referencing biological differences we would usually refer to sex rather than gender, in accordance with our style guide, which advises: “Use sex to refer to a person’s physical development and gender to describe how they identify themselves”. We have since tweaked the text to reflect this.

Thank you again for contacting us – we always welcome the opportunity to review our content. All complaints are sent to senior management and we’ve included your points in our overnight reports. These reports ensure that your concerns have been seen by the right people, and help to inform our reporting decisions about current and future content.

Kind regards,

BBC Complaints Team

Boiledbeetle · 24/11/2022 16:17

Grr, words garbled . I received an email from the BBC and the article now states sex rather than gender.

I think I need more tea.

Boiledbeetle · 24/11/2022 16:20

Text in article now reads as follows

Next my fingers turn white and they feel cold. The blood vessels in my hands are being closed off - known as vasoconstriction - in order to keep my warm blood for my critical organs.

This would happen even more quickly if I were a different sex.

Boiledbeetle · 24/11/2022 16:22

I mean they still don't say "if I was a WOMAN" but it's better than "if I was a different GENDER"

SallyLockheart · 24/11/2022 16:23

I’ve got the same email today. A bit begrudging but it encourages me to carry on picking up these points. 😀

TinFoilHatty · 24/11/2022 16:24

Hi fives, wims. Great result. Hahah at grudgingly asking us to carry on Grin. We sure will.

Boiledbeetle · 24/11/2022 16:25

@SallyLockheart well quite. These little wins are adding up though. Not fast enough for my liking mind you. But at least it wasn't a we don't agree with you email.

SallyLockheart · 24/11/2022 16:28

I’ve got this fear of turning into a female version of Victor Meldrew - “would you believe what the BBC are saying……”

ErrolTheDragon · 24/11/2022 16:41

When referencing biological differences we would usually refer to sex rather than gender, in accordance with our style guide, which advises: “Use sex to refer to a person’s physical development and gender to describe how they identify themselves”.

Good, glad they've fixed it to adhere to their style guide.
Whether there are many instances where people do actually 'identify themselves' rather than just existing as a male or female is another matter for another piece, no doubt.

nilsmousehammer · 24/11/2022 17:02

A different sex....

No, there's still only two.

pistachioicecream · 24/11/2022 17:18

Came on to share the response I'd received from the BBC complaints team this afternoon, which is the same as the one @Boiledbeetle and @SallyLockheart got. Glad to see others complained too!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/11/2022 17:27

I got the same reply too. I was glad to see what was said about the style guide as it gives a clearly articulated framework (that we may need to remind them about occasionally 😉)

I got the same too and will look out for any times when they say anything which could suggest a man is biologically female or use the word woman to both describe a male identifying as such as a biological female - they can't have it both ways.
