Emmeline Pankhurst is often named as one of the hundred most important people of the twentieth century. It is for her leadership of the ‘militant’ Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU), the most notorious of the various groupings campaigning for the parliamentary vote of women in Edwardian Britain, that she is so well known. This illustrated ONLINE talk will offer an account of her life, particularly exploring the personal and political factors that made her a ‘militant’. Although ‘militancy’ is usually associated with the more violent, illegal tactics that some members of the WSPU engaged in from 1912, it will be argued that the term embraced a broad range of tactics both legal and illegal that she readily supported.
