Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Julie Hesmondhalgh, who played Hayley Cropper on Coronation Street, wouldn't take the role today as she's 'cis-gender'

Just listening to her on Radio 4's Front Row now.

She also decribes herself a left-wing intersectional feminist.

She's drunk the cool-aid though, the section of the book she's written (why she's on Front Row this evening) that she chooses to read out is about how fond she is of her daughters when they tell her off for mis-gendering someone.

I know, it's not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but as an avid Radio 4 listener, it would be nice to hear some balance every now and then, not just this unquestioning 'be kind' attitude whenever this comes up.

is she 'making up for' having played that role because she feels guilty about it?

listen here, 1st section

Do you remember the film 'the crying game'? Male actor presenting as female. Budding relationship with straight man. Very powerful - doubt Corrie was up for this at the time - especially with Roy.

Eh?

Has anyone watched The Connors recently? It's the follow-on series without Roseanne Barr herself (as she got cancelled for Trump-supporting rants)

Becky is working for a new manager. I looked up from my phone, looked at them, looked at my husband, went "is that a man transwoman?" and went back to my phone. Laughed my head off at the next episode where the manager "revealed " she was trans and Becky was shocked.

So the undetectable transwoman storyline is still a thing.

I don't like the tone of this site or some of the people who use it, so I shan't be wasting my time on here again! You can insult to your heart's content now, but I won't care!!!

Ah we all loved Hayley, leave her alone!

Ironically, Hayley Cropper being played by an obvious female was highly effective pro-trans propaganda. It gave an unrealistic impression of transwomen as female-looking and harmless.

The storyline was that Hayley Cropper came out as transgender to her husband of many years, and was portrayed very sympathetically. This storyline wouldn't even have been possible with a transgender actress, as none of them pass, so wouldn't be realistic to think that Hayley's husband never knew.

I remember this story as a child, and was part of the reason I grew up sympathetic to the (claimed) plight of transwomen. Now, I think it's an appalling story demonstrating a lack of consent and concern for the husband.

Another sympathetic storyline was in the prison drama Bad Girls, where Aran, a transwoman character played by a very pretty real woman, was bullied and beaten by irrational, mean and bigoted inmates when her trans status was revealed. When in real life, the male inmates bully, threaten and assault the females.

Prat is a euphemism for a swear word, a minor expletive, if you will.

I’m interested to read upthread that Annie Wallace guided the Hayley storyline.

I wonder why Annie didn’t play Hayley? 🤨

Of course Annie later had a most unrealistic prison scene in Hollyoaks, where much smaller women were the unlikely bullies. Pity Annie didn’t insist on playing Hayley at the time. I suspect the path of transactivism in the UK might have run a little differently, had there been honesty throughout.

the early days storyline where Hayley revealed they were a transwoman and everyone was completely shocked because they had absolutely no idea

Did anyone watch it? Did you think it was realistic?

I did as assumed the character had an intersex condition. I really thought it was that, not ‘born in the wrong body feelings.’ Guess I was wrong. Surprised she wasn’t wearing a short skirt and heels if it’s ’wrong body’ stuff.

I've never seen it, but I can understand what you're all saying, re trying to put across that transw are just the same as "any other" woman. I think that exactly the same thing was going on, when the BBC had a woman read out "Emily" Bridge's demented rant about trans genocide.

There's no way that they reading them's own words would have portrayed they in a remotely sympathetic light, as their voice is unmistakably male.

Catsanfan · 22/10/2023 09:28

It's interesting how mindsets change . It didn't bother me at time that Laverne Cox / Sophia Burset was in a women's prison in OITNB but it gives me the absolute rage now

Bonkersworknonsense · 22/10/2023 16:43

Hayley’s storyline annoyed me at the time as it was another case in Corrie of having to suspend disbelief as there was no way the person playing Hayley had ever been anything but a girl then woman. There’s enough suspension of disbelief going on with kidnappings and murders and people having confidential chats in the Platts’ lounge while the subject of the chat is unaware in the kitchen mere feet away, without having us deny our own eyes with Hayley.

puffyisgood · 22/10/2023 20:25

Hayley was really flattering to the 'the trans community', being both impossibly virtuous and psychically indistinguishable from a real woman. There'd have been real cause for complaint if Hayley had been some lantern-jawed six footer whose main aim in life was to get one of the other machinists to handle her 'girldick'.
