The female suffrage movement was hugely influential on young minds in the early twentieth century and had consequences globally. What is often overlooked in broader histories of Britain and activism is that many Indian families settled in Britain in the early twentieth century and that middle- and upper-class Indian girls who grew up in Britain often became keen feminists and suffragists. This talk will offer some insight into the experiences of Indian girls at home and school in England, to consider how and why they engaged with political activism, and how their experiences were shaped by colonialism. It will delve into the stories of a range of Indian women who were inspired to consider different forms of equality and imagine different forms of participation, inspired by their home life, school and connections they made as young people in post-Edwardian Britain.
