Podcast episode on puberty blockers and hormones

I thought this was really worth a listen: www.blockedandreported.org/p/episode-138-jon-stewart-and-john#details

The news comedians Jon Stewart and John Oliver have each done recent TV segments on "youth gender medicine", which basically is all the stuff women on here worry about constantly involving puberty blockers and hormones. The podcast goes through their claims, examines the evidence for them (or lack thereof) and there's a lot of backup material in the show notes.

I found it absolutely shocking to hear these comedians' assertions of blanket support for "gender affirming care" (ie. blockers, hormones and surgery), especially when set against the irreversible negative physical side effects, obviously of surgery but even of puberty blockers. I already knew that it wasn't a magical pause button and that if you stop taking them you won't just proceed as you would have if you hadn't ever taken them - what I didn't realise is that some kids are left permanently physically disabled by them, including crumbling bones, joints, not being able to stand for long periods because of back pain, and other issues. And it isn't just a vanishingly rare thing - an investigation in Sweden found that out of 400 odd children at least 13 had suffered these life-changing disabling side effects. And I wonder how many others are out there, lost to follow-up like they were at the Tavistock.

Anyway, I like listening to podcasts while I'm exercising or driving and I thought this one was worth it.

(Another episode that is very good is this one, "How the Left can fight cancel culture": www.blockedandreported.org/p/episode-136-how-the-left-can-fight#details)

I'm halfway through this and really enjoying it. DH and I have watched John Oliver for years and I hated that episode. It's really made me wonder what other topics his show have been so sloppy on that I wouldn't have known enough to question.

Same here. I used to like John Oliver too. Not anymore since I heard his views on "youth gender medicine" and sex work

Saw some clips of Jon Stewart challenging a republican politician about trans children in sport (I think) and he came across as really dismissive and smug and disappointing. Like he couldn’t engage with it critically at all.

Thanks for this recommendation. Halfway through it now. Refreshing to hear people talking in such detail and providing links to research.

It's long, approaching two hours, but is essential listening to anyone having a strong interest in gender identity ideology and its flaws.

It is amusing to hear how Jon Stewart and John Oliver are now both leaping onto the bandwagon just after the wheels have fallen off. Especially when you listen to their off-the-chart arrogance, smugness, and ignorance.

I found it very jarring to hear the laughter (live or canned?) after each smug and ill-informed utterance on the clips. I don't find anything funny about this subject.

One of the John/Jons said that if one of his children told him they needed a particular treatment he would go to any lengths to make it happen (I paraphrase, but I think that was the gist). Really? Withouth looking into this in depth to see that it's in the child's best interests and supported by research evidence?
