Just the one?

Fandangoes · 27/10/2022 15:54

quote from NS
'However, in circumstances in which a minister is unable to support the Government, it is the case that the only options available are resignation ahead of the vote or dismissal thereafter.'
Is this really how the Scottish Government is run? What is the point of even having a vote if you are not allowed to oppose it?!

ThickTiuri · 27/10/2022 15:56

This is how it works in Westminster as well unless it is a free vote.

Have you not been paying attention? The idea that sturgeon would brook any kind of dissent is, er, laughable.

Fandangoes · 27/10/2022 16:02

to be really honest I have never paid much attention to politics on the basis that whenever I have really tried to get a better understanding I just end up really frustrated by all the lies and mis-truths that are told by ALL parties. However I have started to realise that I need to to get better informed about what is going on and add my voice before the lunatics take over on the premise that nobody raised an objection!!

that is exactly how it works. All SNP MPs or MSPs must vote according to policy. No deviation. No abstaining. If you go against the SNP, you are sacked.

Democratic, isnt it?

Westminster would be the same I think it's a whip vote so they had to back it.

Good on her I've been following it on the scottish news and its an absolute farce.

Ash Regan is a brave woman. She is going to get a tremendous backlash fron the hardcore SNP voters who see anyone going against Sturgeon as a traitor.

Unseelie · 27/10/2022 16:10

I’m so sick of this idea that the government tells MPs (or SMPs) how they must vote. That is anti-democratic.

I’d like to see political parties banned, like they are in whatever that country is that bans political parties. Each area elects a representative who’s respected locally, then that MP votes according to their opinion and conscience. That’s how things should work.

Political parties are run by bullies.

TeenDivided · 27/10/2022 16:16

Who would be in charge of making decisions @Unseelie ? People with common cause would group together, maybe under a banner name. Then maybe the biggest group would get to put forward ideas and make decisions? That group would need a leader sometimes. Perhaps within that largest group a subgroup would be needed to steer things. To stop chaos maybe they would agree to collective responsibility...

Fandangoes · 27/10/2022 16:16

that is totally bonkers - how can a vote be worthwhile if you are forced to vote in favour or lose your job!!

Welcome to Nicola Sturgeon's Scotland.

Because members of a political party are elected to take forward the manifesto commitments and policies of that party.

TheBiologyStupid · 27/10/2022 16:28

Kudos to Ash Regan. I hope some of her colleagues grow a spine very quickly.

Terftrain · 27/10/2022 16:30

Most political parties have members with diverse views within their particular sphere of politics. Members are allowed to have different opinions.

The SNP are not allowed to hold any other “dissenting” views, what a shitshow. They’re an absolute joke and embarrassment. Yet they love their Westminster salaries and the opportunity to blame others for their many failures.

I think the current system is OK. When I vote for a candidate I am voting for them because they are a member of a party that has a manifesto. I do not want my MP voting against the manifesto that I voted for.

I think that it is good that MPs can vote with their conscience, and there are certainly times when I am very glad they do. But I vote for a set a policies, not for an MP to then do whatever he or she wants irrespective of the fact I voted for them on the back of a manifesto.

TeenDivided · 27/10/2022 16:31

If something is in a manifesto, Gov ministers are expected to vote for it or resign from government, not resign as MP.
If not in manifesto some things can be more flexible.

MariEllie · 27/10/2022 17:16

Bravo to one brave lady standing up to the lunatics

validnumber · 27/10/2022 17:23

Following on from the comments above does anyone know if this was in their manifesto?

validnumber · 27/10/2022 17:25

I also asked our local Lib Dem when he was canvassing for votes last. He didn't agree with his party line on this subject but I assume he would still have to vote a certain way if told to.

Although given it says they will ensure changes to GRA don’t adversely affect women you’d think Ash Regan would have grounds to stay the GRA changes are not in the spirit of the manifesto.

It is certainly refreshing to see a divergence of opinion in the SNP.
