Sharron Davies backs free speech and women's rights campaigners calling for Sport England's diversity chief to be fired for his role in 'Orwellian' transgender row

Sport England is facing calls to sack its diversity champion, Aedan Wolton

Wolton accused former colleague, Rachel Meade, of making 'transphobic' posts

Complaint to Social Work England led to Meade being suspended from her job

Sport England is facing calls to sack its diversity champion for his role in an 'Orwellian nightmare' that almost cost a dedicated social worker her job of 20 years.

Olympic swimming star Sharron Davies last night joined free speech and women's rights campaigners calling for the sporting quango's diversity chief, Aedan Wolton, to be fired or resign.

Mr Wolton, whose taxpayer-funded job is to 'tackle inequalities' in sport, had accused a former colleague, Rachel Meade, of making 'transphobic' posts on her private Facebook page.

She had shared links to news articles, including from The Mail on Sunday, about transgender issues, also to blogs and petitions surrounding the national debate over whether people should be allowed to self-identify their gender.

Mr Wolton's single complaint to the regulator Social Work England led to the mother-of-two being suspended from her job at Westminster City Council for a year.

She also faced being struck off by the watchdog at a 'fitness to practise' hearing.

Legal proceedings hung over her for almost two years.

Aeden Wolton, whose taxpayer-funded job is to 'tackle inequalities' in sport, had accused a former colleague, Rachel Meade, of making 'transphobic' posts on her private Facebook page

In a humiliating climbdown, last week, Social Work England dropped its case against the 54-year-old, who said the 'last two years have been nothing short of an Orwellian nightmare for me and my family'.

She added: 'My apparent crime was to share some news articles and petitions about the self-ID gender debate to fewer than 50 friends on Facebook. I found myself wrongly accused of holding abhorrent transphobic views.'

Last night, Ms Davies MBE said Mr Wolton's role in Mrs Meade's ordeal meant he should be axed from his job as Strategic Lead, Equality at Sport England.
She said: 'This person should not be employed by Sport England if he does this type of thing.'

Toby Young, from the Free Speech Union, said: 'It's ridiculous that she was put through two years of hell on the strength of a single complaint from an ex-colleague.'

Huh.
I agree he should resign, but these gender ideologists never do that because they're so arrogant.

Helleofabore · 23/10/2022 08:01

He should be fired because his idea of diversity is harmful to women.

I feel that the responsibility for the fuck up around Rachel is fully on Social Work England though. This man made a complaint that should have been dismissed very early after thorough investigation.

Him making a complaint is a serious move, of course it is. His position lent weight, no doubt. But on the other hand it illustrates the evangelical zeal he has and that should be considered not appropriate for his role. His role is about making sure everyone gets a fair chance at sport.

And surely, if that magic work around was possible that allows males taking specific hormones to compete fairly with females, he would have devised it by now.

Either that ‘solution’, so emptily said to must exist, doesn’t and didn’t ever, or this person is not clever enough to find it. Well, both could just as likely be true.

I suspect though that this ‘diversity champion’ has a very biased view fed from feelz rather than sports science and is not fit for the job he is in.

What a surprise. Aeden went to goldsmiths, that fine bastion of misogyny and wokeism

What a nasty little man with a massive ego he is. I hope he loses his job

Helleofabore · 23/10/2022 09:18

Goldsmiths? No surprise at all.

”Toby Young, from the Free Speech Union, said: 'It's ridiculous that she was put through two years of hell on the strength of a single complaint from an ex-colleague.”

I’m not sure this person should resign. Surely the problem isn’t the complaint but how it was dealt with by SWE. It might create a culture of fear around raising concerns if the outcome of a complaint could be loss of your job.

Yes this.

I think he's someone who doesn't belong in a diversity role. He is clearly unfit because he doesn't value diversity. He is a TRA.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 23/10/2022 10:01

These people do it because they know they can persecute people this way. It's not going to affect him. What we need is for these institutions to stop reacting to vexatious, malicious complaints by trans activists.

MrsOvertonsWindow · 23/10/2022 10:05

I agree he shouldn't be sacked for his comments about RM. His arguments should have been dismissed for the tell tale drivel they were by SWE from the outset.

However, what does need to be examined is whether his intimidatory tactics have had any influence on Sport England - in particular their reliance on Stonewall and the other trans lobby groups as they attempt to wedge born males into women's sport.

I’d agree that if his influence is leading to discriminatory practices/ policies at Sport England then that needs investigation.

Helleofabore · 23/10/2022 10:32

His zealotry makes him completely unfit for his role in sport.

He is obviously incapable of advocating for true fairness for all all. His actions indicate he lacks any balance or perspective.

I hope that his actions are examined and the blind adherence to Stonewall guidance judged to mean he is incapable of his role.

I agree. He is not a diversity champion if he is calling for peoplecwho hold different views to be sacked. Sadly, this seems to be the norm, though. Where I live the council appointed a TW to a similar role who then called on employers to sack GC feminists. 🙄

Exactly this.

Sharron Davies is SO brave, isn't she?

She has risked a lot for her unshakable stance on this. She absolutely refuses to be cowed. I find her really awe inspiring.

Imnobody4 · 23/10/2022 11:23

I'm a bit torn but I'm also pretty sure he would have said he was just holding Rachel to account - what's good for the goose and all that.

She posted a few posts about repealing the GRA on her private Facebook. That's all.

Reporting her to her employers for wrongthink is not holding her to account. He might justify it as that but he was trying to destroy her career.

PriOn1 · 23/10/2022 11:41

I’m also rather torn over this. On the one hand, those receiving these complaints should absolutely put them to bed quickly and those companies or bodies that bow to these extremists are very heavily to blame for what is happening.

That said, for a long time now, extremist TRAs and in particular, very vocal young TRAs have been learning that they can send these hateful complaints and threats without any negative consequences to themselves. At the same time, when anyone GC loses their job or is removed from office or loses the chance to speak, it is roundly stated to be no more than “consequences of their own actions”.

Personally I’d quite like to see some consequences applied in the opposite direction in order to provide a deterrent against others casually doing the same thing, while assuming they are safe behind their Teflon status.

That's what I meant - like Graham Norton - accountability works both ways. Perhaps this will be what it takes. He's a Diversity Chief who doesn't respect other people's views - it makes him unsuitable for the job he has. He should be held accountable for his intolerance and bias.

Yes it should do. They are always so intolerant.

On another tangential note, his report on lgbtq representation in sport is unintentionally hilarious. He's trying to find outrage but it seems that lesbians and gay men do more sport than straight people and there's no data on trans and no binary people because there aren't enough who have responded to be statistically significant. So he has to go off on a bit of a waffle on how marginalised people in the lgbtq community are despite zero data.

Melroses · 23/10/2022 13:17

What competitive sport is Mr Wolton involved in? Gym membership?

IcakethereforeIam · 23/10/2022 14:12

I'm sure I read somewhere that Aedon Wolton is a transperson. I might possibly have followed a link from Fair Cop.

Perhaps, Aedon would be big enough to apologise?

My mistake. I assumed from their career history they were a gay man but they are a transman.

334bu · 23/10/2022 15:15

As a transman they should be well aware of the physical advantage any male person has over transmen and other female people.

IcakethereforeIam · 23/10/2022 15:31

If only cognitive dissonance was a competitive sport.
