Name changed for this
My work has just sent an email out about menopause

Not once does it mention women

Around half the POPULATION goes through menopause

I understand they are trying to be "inclusive" but feels like alienating to women

Should I say something! Help me draft what I should say because here's what I would say "why no reference to WOMEN who are actually the ones who experience this?"

I would say something like if they want to inclusive, but clear (especially important in cases where, for example, English is someone’s second language), they would be better to say ‘women, trans men and some non binary people’

Or women. Menopause doesn’t care how you feel. It’s a sex based pita.

Which is why another PP suggested putting in a disclaimer (ideally footnoted?) stating that this also applies to x, y, z groups.

Yes after my post and using essentially the same language Confused

See my comment of 16.21 🤷🏼‍♀️

The purpose was to raise resources we have that support "people" experiing menopause (I would also like to add here the scoping sessions for onboarding these resources was a group of men)

I sent an email citing alot of was recommended in here
I doubt I'll get a response
I wasn't alone in my thoughts 2 other colleagues came to me expressing the same views

Don't erase women! Don't erase the word woman! This is what I felt most strongly about the erasure of the word woman from a communication highlighting resources for menopause

How about this.

Dear HR.

While I can see your trying to be inclusive, your wording is actually discriminating the Female sex .
As per Doctor Robert Winston, a Labour life peer and a doctor, said people cannot change their sex because it is “genetically determined” and only gender can be changed. So could we please say Female Sex,

The statistical pedant in me also wants to point out that 50% WILL go through menopause is wrong. 20% of the population are post-menopausal women so they won't go through menopause again, 50% obvs male leaving 30% who will go through it.

<misses point but agrees with it> Grin

There's also ageism at play here by the sounds of things. I come up against it daily at work - the majority of my colleagues are under 35. I had someone today tell me that it's good our employer is inclusive of elderly people because we still have a lot to give. I'm in my 50s 😡

pattihews · 18/10/2022 19:59

Yes, I think there's rampant ageism at the moment. There's a strong 'okay Boomer' and 'nanna' attitude from so many young people. It's nasty.

Isn't the point they're trying to make (writing to all employees) that this is something experienced by 50% of the population so it's high time we paid mote attention to it?

There are plenty of good battles to fight about language but this doesn't sound like the most important one, it's a style choice.

Yes, that was my thought too - they are trying to highlight that it's a big deal - I think it's good it's not relegated to a 'women's issue' (I know women are 50% of the population but it seems like loads of people switch off when it's phrased like that - misogyny....)

Any other examples OP?

You mention that 50% of the population will go through this, but there is no indication of how I can recognise those colleagues to whom it might apply.

I know what this is trying to say but you could get in hot water by suggesting you are trying to work out which people 'it applies to' - like you're trying to suss out who's having the hot flushes. (Similar to trying to suss out who might become pregnant, etc - dodgy ground).
