Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Why don't we build our own resources?

This might be wishful thinking but I was thinking recently about how social media like FB, twitter and reddit ban women for knowing what a woman is and financial companies like Paypal or crowdfunding sites like Crowdjustice will shut down pro-women accounts. Meanhwhile unions left right and centre whether it's teaching, nursing or academia are betraying women and our rights.

Justine has done a great job with mumsnet and whatever the restrictions are we should be grateful for having a forum for discussion, but we need more resources so that we are not dependent on men and their male-centred focus.

Is there are a way to make women-centred or women-owned sites happen? Do you think it is possible to be self sufficient as women setting up our own forums, payment resources, crowdfunding and unions? I'm sick of men calling the shots and telling us what we are and what we should accept. Things have to be better than this surely?

There are forums; ovarit and spinster xyz.

Crowd funding and banking would be good.

WarriorN · 11/10/2022 06:01

Union too, though I think there may be one? Or similar?

Helleofabore · 11/10/2022 06:02

They already exist or are getting in place though in many instances.

Spinster was set up as a result of Twitter bans, There is also Ovarit and Giggle. Women in Australia are building or have built a funding platform, if I remember correctly.

There are groups such as Women’s Place and FairPlay for Women.

To maintain independence, it requires funding that won’t interfere which means these are smaller start ups. But they are out there and it is starting to happen. However they are always going to be smaller because they are a niche provider.

Banking? Some countries have micro finance charities for women. Usually run by charities or church charities.

i imagine that finance companies are notoriously hard to sustain from a reporting point of view. That would require a great number of people and resources to do well.

RhymesWithOrange · 11/10/2022 06:20

Giggle was accused of discrimination by a transwomen and Sal Robins had the threat of a court case hanging over her while she was 9 months' pregnant.

Every time women announce they're going to do something only for women a transwoman or TRA pops up and says "are you including us?" and then gets nasty if women say no - ride for murdered women; counting dead women; breastfeeding groups; menopause groups have all been targeted by trans activists.

Would it be possible to set up such facilities using the laws which allow men's private clubs to remain single sex, and citing the exemptions in the Equality Act? Make them membership only, and make membership dependent on being signatory to the aims of the group. After all, if people can be expelled from organisations for being vaguely defined transphobes, it would only be fair for people to be expelled for clearly defined femiphobia. (And I use that coinage as they edit out any reference to misogyny. They recognise "phobe" words.)
They would kick up a stink, but we point out that there is nothing to stop them starting up their own groups and making them attractive for natal women to join, so their would be no need for groups to discriminate.

Treaclemine · 12/10/2022 08:24

Aargh, "there would be no need"
The nimber of lessons I have given on the correct use of "there", "their" and "they're"...

Treaclemine · 12/10/2022 08:25

And "number"

RhymesWithOrange · 12/10/2022 08:50

But while those in power are in thrall to the mantra TWAW then excluding "transwomen" from women's spaces is classified as discrimination. Women have built their own movement, refuges, services, all through hard work and self sacrifice, just for men to demand entry.

Reference to all male clubs won't really help as the ones that still exist are so regressive it's unhelpful to use as a frame of reference.

I think we should approach this from all angles - build female only platforms, reassert our ownership and right to the ones we previously built and challenge the orthodoxy that single sex is "transphobic".

Good luck with that. Doesn’t matter the sex of the owner/founder still have to comply with the law of the land.

Treaclemine · 12/10/2022 09:01

Which includes provision for single sex spaces.

Yes, but OP is talking about moving banned activity from one platform to another. She mentioned FB and Twitter bans, PayPal being shut down…that’s usually due to illegal activity like hate speech or inciting violence.

Setting up a woman owned platform isn’t going let you do said banned activity. So there’s really no point. If it’s illegal & banned on the regular platforms, it will still be illegal on a new platform.
