The final line of that article is very interesting and could explain what’s happened

"I love the missions to get girls interested in programming. I just do not appreciate it with a side of politics" said the mom and Twitter-er

I wonder if Girls Who Code have made an assumption that all ‘good’ people share their views on abortion, gay rights, trans rights etc, and (to quote CGD) are proselytising without even realising?

You might be able to see part of the issue from their website.
Girls who code are "on a mission to close the gender gap in technology".
They run summer programs, for example, "Current 9th-12th grade students who identify as girls or non-binary can apply."
Point missed there, by a mile.

That doesn't really explain why the books are banned though, does it.

Apparently they do not believe in fairies either. (Actually, Newsweek don’t give details on the Pan ban, but my headcanon is absolutely that Hook has FINALLY escaped the crocodile & there’s an Elementary School in Florida somewhere whose strict English Principal is frequently described as “quirky”. But the children knowing the Eton boat song is very cultured, right?)

The article's pretty vague. Only some of the books are banned by one school board. I think it's to do with the inclusion of lesbian characters. Apparently one of the characters has a crush on another girl, while another lives with an aunt & her aunt's girlfriend.

Yeah

but surely the daughters of homophobes or pro lifers or whatever also deserve to be shown that they could have a career in IT?

hence the need to avoid bleed over of other fashionable causes

Sorry, I was reading other articles too and got muddled - the one in the Register's not vague.
